Philip looked at her like a drowning man spotting a lifeline.
"Elaine, thank god you're here. Quickly, tell Mr. Langford this is all just a huge misunderstanding."
Elaine didn't even look at him. She walked straight past him and stopped directly in front of Lucian and Seraphina.
"Mr. Langford, Mrs. Langford, I am so sorry."
Philip's face drained of color. "Elaine, why are you apologizing?"
Elaine raised her hand and delivered a vicious slap across the other side of Philip's face.
The strike was far harder than Seraphina's. Philip stumbled backward, grabbing the wall just to stay on his feet.
"Elaine, are you out of your mind?"
Clutching the handmade bracelet, Elaine spoke through gritted teeth. "You know exactly whether I'm out of my mind or not."
Philip scrambled to defend himself. "I just had a little too much to drink! Liquid courage made me say stupid things, but I swear I didn't actually do anything!"
Elaine let out a harsh scoff. "Philip, the only reason I agreed to come tonight was because I was terrified you couldn't control your disgusting habits."
"I figured the worst you'd do was embarrass yourself in front of strangers. I never imagined you'd have the nerve to target Mrs. Langford."
Philip reached out, trying to grab her arm.
"Honey, just listen to me. I wasn't thinking straight..."
Elaine recoiled violently. "Don't touch me! You make me sick. Do you really think I don't know what you did with that woman in the other room?"
Philip froze. How on earth did she find out about that?
But this was not the time to ask questions.
He immediately went into damage control mode.
"I screwed up. I'll give you my credit cards the second we get home. I'll bring you to every single dinner from now on. Just don't make a scene in front of them."
Elaine stared at him, her eyes completely dead. "Oh, so now you care about making a scene?"
Philip whipped his head toward Lucian.
"Mr. Langford, this is a family matter. A domestic dispute! Please, leave us some dignity, we can still move forward with the deal."
Lucian tightened his hold on Seraphina's hand. "The deal is off."
The last shred of color vanished from Philip's face.
"Mr. Langford, the project is already in its final stages. If you pull out now, the Langford Group will take a massive financial hit."
"We can afford it."
Philip's breathing grew frantic. "But you're competing against the second branch of your family right now! The entire corporate world is watching you. If you tank a major contract over a personal grudge, aren't you worried the board will turn on you?"
Lucian smiled, but there was absolutely zero warmth behind it.
