Seraphina reached for her phone, but before her fingers even brushed the edge of the desk, the device was already swiped into Lucian's palm.
She glared at him. "Lucian, what are you doing with my phone?"
He glanced at the illuminated screen and casually flipped it face down in his hand.
"It's ten o'clock."
She let out a breath of disbelief and reached out to snatch it back.
"So what if it's ten? What if it's important business?"
He smoothly moved the phone out of reach, catching her wrist with his other hand—not forcefully, but just enough to keep her at bay.
"After ten, even important business has to get in line."
"Mr. Langford, exactly whose approval did this rule get?"
"Mine."
"A household law passed by a single person carries no executive authority."
Watching her argue semantics, the exhaustion in his eyes seemed to dissipate.
"Then let's formalize the procedure now. Does Mrs. Langford approve?"
"I do not."
"Vetoed."
"You're vetoing my veto?"
Unable to wrench her wrist free, she leaned down and playfully bit the back of his hand. She didn't bite down hard, leaving only a faint circle of teeth marks.
He lowered his eyes to the imprint, one eyebrow arching slightly.
"Mrs. Langford is resorting to biting now?"
She let go instantly, her face burning again.
"Don't talk nonsense."
"I'm simply stating the facts."
"State fewer facts."
He lifted the phone higher, his voice drawing out into a slow, deliberate drawl.
"The night belongs to me."
Trying to hide her amusement behind a stern face, she retorted.
"It also belongs to Little Bean."
Capitalizing on his relaxed grip, she yanked the phone back and spun toward the door.
"I'm going to see my son."
He leaned back in his wheelchair, chuckling softly.
"Your escape tactics are improving, Mrs. Langford."
She threw a glare over her shoulder.
He casually smoothed out the wrinkles in the light blanket across his lap.
"We'll continue negotiations tomorrow."
"Tomorrow I have actual business to attend to."
"Then I'll get in line."
