Lucky hesitated for a second. He glanced at Zeke and lowered his voice to a hushed whisper. "Zeke, Victor's in critical condition, and we... we can't exactly leave the mountains..."
Seraphina strained her ears to catch what they were saying, but she only managed to make out the words 'leave the mountains.'
Just as she suspected, these two were hiding something major.
Which meant her identity as a doctor was her ultimate trump card right now.
Zeke wiped the sweat from his face with a bloodstained hand, staring intensely at Seraphina for a long, heavy moment.
Finally, his deep voice broke the silence. "Our boss is hurt. He's running a high fever and his wound is infected. If you can actually save him, we'll take you with us. But if you try to pull anything..."
He patted the crude hunting rifle in his hands.
Seraphina breathed a sigh of relief and nodded immediately. "I'll do everything I can! But my companion is badly hurt too. His leg is broken, and I need your help carrying him."
"Companion?" Lucky wiggled his eyebrows. "Don't tell me it's another beauty just like you?"
He practically salivated at the thought of scoring two gorgeous women.
Zeke's eyes darkened as he shot Lucky a lethal glare.
Lucky instantly shut his mouth.
Seraphina clarified, "No, it's my husband. We were sightseeing in the area and had an accident, so..."
Lucky couldn't help but scoff, "Are you out of your mind? Sightseeing in the middle of this godforsaken forest in the dead of night?"
"Unless you two were out here looking for a thrill in the woods?"
Taking in Seraphina's disheveled, torn clothes, Lucky felt even more confident in his filthy assumption.
Seraphina's eyes turned icy, her voice sharp with displeasure. "I believe that is none of your business."
Lucky opened his mouth to snap back, but Zeke barked coldly, "Lucky!"
Lucky shrank back, deciding to keep his mouth shut.
Zeke narrowed his eyes, sizing Seraphina up one last time.
After a moment of hesitation, he agreed.
Seraphina led the two men back to where she had left the fire.
Lucian was no longer sitting by the campfire. He had dragged himself along the ground, slowly moving in the direction Seraphina had run off to.
