"Getting in the way?" Eleanor bristled, clearly unhappy with the suggestion. "I'm not going there to start a fight. I'm going to see my great-grandson! If you're too busy to come, then don't. I'll go by myself!"
Charlene choked on her words, struggling to maintain her carefully crafted expression.
Just then, Lawrence walked into the room, holding his phone. His expression was complicated. Evidently, he had just received the news as well.
"Mom," Lawrence approached, his tone soothing. "Don't get too worked up. I'll take you. But you have to promise me that we won't stay long. Lucian and Seraphina need their rest."
Eleanor shot him a look and let out a huff. "Now that sounds reasonable. Go get changed. We leave in ten minutes!"
Lawrence nodded and turned toward his bedroom.
Charlene followed closely behind him. The moment the bedroom door clicked shut, her face darkened completely.
"So she had a kid. Does the old lady really need to act this hysterical?" Charlene hissed, her voice dripping with resentment. "It's like no one else has ever given birth to a son before."
Lawrence glanced back at her, his gaze chillingly indifferent. "Keep your voice down."
"I..." Charlene started to argue but ultimately swallowed her words.
She knew Lawrence had been in a foul mood lately. Ever since his recent project failure, his influence within the company had severely diminished. Meanwhile, Lucian had successfully closed several massive deals, riding a wave of undeniable success. Their side of the family had gained absolutely nothing tangible, aside from Eleanor's superficial pleasantries.
Even with Landon back, he was stuck in a stagnant position with zero presence.
That was exactly why Charlene was so desperate to find a wealthy, well-connected heiress for Landon to marry. A powerful alliance was the only way to boost his career.
And now that Seraphina had delivered a son—the eldest grandson of the Langford family—the weight he would carry in the future was unimaginable.
Eleanor inspected them and nodded in satisfaction, though a slight frown quickly creased her forehead. "Is one locket really enough? Should we bring that vintage heirloom as well?"
"Don't worry, Ma'am," Gretchen advised with a warm smile. "We're just visiting the baby today. You can take your time giving the rest of the gifts. Once Little Bean has his Welcome Gala, you can shower him with whatever you'd like."
Eleanor considered this and agreed, deciding not to overcomplicate things. "Alright, let's get moving."
Leaning on her cane, Eleanor walked noticeably faster than usual. Gretchen hovered close by, terrified the older woman might trip.
Charlene's expression soured. Eleanor was so outrageously biased, always saving the best for the main family. It wasn't until Lawrence shot her a sharp warning look that Charlene forced her features back into a pleasant mask.
The family piled into the sleek town car, heading straight for the hospital.
