"Mom, Sebastian is..."
"He's what? If he genuinely wanted to marry you, he would have made a move by now. Don't blame me for being harsh, but you're following him around without a title, bending over backward for him. Do you really not see how this is going to end for you?"
It pained Zelda deeply to see her daughter in such a state.
Of course, she wanted her daughter to marry into unimaginable wealth.
But with Sebastian's current attitude, that dream was slipping away.
Tears welled up in Sienna's eyes.
She knew her mother was right, which only made the humiliation worse.
"Keep an eye on Melody, too," Zelda warned, her tone heavy. "She's only helping you because you're useful to her. The second you're not, she'll turn on you in a heartbeat. I've seen her kind a million times."
Sienna looked down, clenching her hands tightly.
"I know."
She stood up, grabbed her bag, and headed for the stairs.
Zelda called out from behind her, "What do you want for dinner? I'll have the maid make it."
"Whatever."
Sienna shut her bedroom door, feeling entirely defeated.
Her mother's words echoed relentlessly in her mind.
Either get a ring, or cut your losses.
Marriage.
How was she supposed to pull that off?
Sebastian had grown incredibly distant, treating her with the polite aloofness he would reserve for a casual acquaintance.
No, he was probably warmer to total strangers than he was to her.
Ever since she lost the baby, she had become completely worthless in the eyes of the Sullivan family.
Back then, they were likely only tolerating her for the sake of the heir.
Sienna buried her face in her pillow, her shoulders trembling slightly.
She couldn't think about it.
The more she dwelled on it, the more she felt like a total joke.
...
"Any thoughts?"
She pondered for a second. "The groundbreaking for the park is mid-next month. I imagine it's going to draw a massive crowd."
Lucian hummed in agreement. "City officials and several heavy-hitting investors."
"Will the Monroes make an appearance?"
He met her eyes. "Melody will be there."
Her expression didn't so much as twitch as she took another sip. "Figured as much."
Leaning back against the cushions, his tone was completely relaxed. "If you're uncomfortable, you don't have to go."
"Why wouldn't I go?" She turned to face him, a brilliant smile lighting up her features. "I haven't stolen anything or hurt anyone. I have zero reasons to hide."
He studied her, a hint of curiosity in his dark gaze. "You really don't mind?"
"Mind what?"
"Melody."
She tilted her head, answering honestly. "I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me at all, considering all her dirty little tricks behind the scenes. But—"
"She can play her little games, and I'll keep living my life. We'll see who comes out on top in the end."
