Tiffany Taylor noticed Seraphina Simmons zoning out and curled her lip. "She's so full of herself now that she married a manager. She shows off to anyone who will listen. I heard her husband is some executive at a company with a bright future."
Tiffany had never gotten along with her, so her words were dripping with sarcasm.
Seraphina offered no comment.
She didn't deliberately avoid Miranda Sinclair, nor did she go out of her way to approach her.
But there were always those people who would seek you out even if you left them alone.
Seraphina couldn't help but roll her eyes internally.
She had just wanted to enjoy a quiet meal.
Sure enough, her intuition was spot on.
Halfway through the dinner, Miranda walked over with a wine glass in hand, wearing a faint, seemingly friendly smile.
"Seraphina? Is that really you! I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me."
She knew exactly who it was.
Seraphina looked up at her and gave a calm smile. "Long time no see."
"It really has been." Miranda sat down next to her, looking her up and down before letting her gaze linger on Seraphina's pale yellow dress for a few seconds. "Is this dress... from ZARA? I think I've seen it before."
Her tone carried a hint of disdain.
Tiffany's expression darkened. Just as she was about to snap back, Seraphina gently squeezed her hand under the table, signaling her to stay calm.
"Is it? I don't really remember," Seraphina replied, her tone perfectly even.
Miranda smirked, her peripheral vision catching Seraphina's bare fingers. No diamond ring.
Her smile deepened.
Seraphina set her water glass down, but before she could answer, Miranda continued talking over her.
"Oh, let me tell you guys, my husband is a manager at The Langford Group right now. You know, the famous Langford Group? They recently acquired a massive plot of land, and he's been swamped with business dinners every single day."
As she spoke, a look of pure arrogance spread across her face.
Everyone could hear the blatant bragging in her tone.
But she undeniably had the right to boast. Everyone knew The Langford Group was the ultimate industry leader; even being a janitor there was something to be proud of.
"The Langford Group?" one classmate gasped. "That company is impossible to get into. Your husband is amazing!"
"He does alright." Miranda waved her hand, feigning humility, though the triumph in her eyes was unmistakable. "He only makes a couple hundred thousand a year. In a place like Capital City, it's barely enough to scrape by."
Tiffany rolled her eyes, muttering under her breath, "Barely enough to scrape by? Look at her smug face..."
How had they never noticed how fake she was back in college?
