My Stepbrother's Dirty Little Secret novel Chapter 620

Chapter 620

My knees felt weak, “I didn’t…”

“You didn’t think?” his voice sharpened, “That seems to be your specialty lately. I almost buried Hazel tonight because of you! Do you understand that?”

My voice shook so badly I barely heard it, “What happened?”

He stared at me for several seconds, “When nobody could find you… she broke. She had a heart attack.

I felt something inside my chest crack, the hallway tilted again, “No…” I whispered, “No…”

Every horrible sentence I’d heard through that study door came rushing back all at once.

“…Gianna needs someone patient enough…”

“…You’ll slow yourself down…”

“…One day you’ll resent it…”

My stomach twisted so violently I thought I would be sick.

Salvatore took another step closer, “You’ve turned this family upside down in one night.”

My throat burned, “I never meant…’

“I don’t care what you meant but Hazel doesn’t need this right now!”

Tears rolled down my face.

“What do you want me to do? You want me to go in there and say, ‘Hazel, the daughter you loved more than anything was too busy sneaking around with my son to think about what her disappearance would do to you?””

“No…” I shook my head, “I didn’t know…”

“You never do.”

His answer came immediately.

“You never think about anyone except what you want.”

My chest hurt.

There wasn’t a single bit of warmth left in his voice.

“What exactly do you think people call a woman who sleeps with her stepbrother behind her mother’s back?”

The word came next, softly, almost cruelly.

“A whore.”

I flinched so hard my shoulder hit the wall, “No…”

“You want to be known as my respectable daughter or is being his bed warmer enough for you?”

My ears rang, tears fell faster, “I didn’t mean…”

He leaned closer to me, “If Hazel finds out…..she won’t survive it.”

I stared at him, “No…”

“The doctors already told us her heart is weak. One more serious shock…” he looked toward her bedroom, “And it could kill her. You want that?” he asked it so calmly, “You want your mother to die knowing the daughter she raised was sleeping with her own stepbrother?”

I couldn’t breathe, “N-No…”

Raphael.

Mom.

Their names crashed together until I couldn’t tell where one pain ended and another began.

Everything hurt.

Everything.

The hallway blurred until the walls melted into streaks of light, maybe it was the concussion, maybe it was the medication, maybe it was because my heart couldn’t carry any more.

1 didn’t know anymore.

I only knew one thing.

Everyone I loved…

Ended up bleeding.

Ended up crying.

Ended up breaking.

Ended up settling for less than they deserved.

Because somewhere along the way… I had walked into their lives.

And for the first time, I wondered if the kindest thing I could ever do for the people I loved. …was disappear from theirs.
