Chapter 486
The blow was so hard my head violently snapped to the left. The iron taste of blood instantly filled my mouth as my lip split against my teeth. My ears buzzed with a loud, ringing sound, and for a second, my body weru completely limp against the chair.
“Hey!”
A panicked scream tore through the room.
It wasn’t me. It was Perla.
Through my blurred vision, I saw a flash of dark fabric. Perla didn’t stay in her corner anymore. She launched herself across the white tiles, her face twisted into a look of pure rage. She reached out and grabbed Doctor Vande from behind, her fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt.
With a loud cry, she threw her entire weight backward and shoved him away from me.
Doctor Vance wasn’t expecting it. He lost his footing, his boots sliding out from under him. He stumbled backward into the metal tray, his lower back slamming hard against the edge. The tray flipped completely over. Dozens of silver instruments, glass jars, and sharp needles hit the concrete, shattering and scattering across the room in a mess of broken glass and rolling metal.
Doctor Vance hit the floor, his hands coming down on the sharp pieces, his face twisting with a look of utter shock.
Perla didn’t even look at him. She turned to me immediately, her eyes wide and wild with tears. She grabbed the buckles on the leather straps, her hands shaking so violently she could barely work the metal pins. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you, Gianna,” she sobbed.
“She is a patient! I am fixing her brain!” Doctor Vance stepped forward, his boots crushing a glass jar beneath his heel, “Your husband gave me full authority to do what is necessary! Move, or I will have the guards remove you from this building!”
“Call him then!” Perla yelled, her face buried in my hair, her spine rigid against him, “Call Giovanni! Tell him you slapped his daughter! Tell him you split her face open! See what he does to you!”
Doctor Vance stopped. The mention of my father’s name made a flicker of cold fear pass through his furious eyes. His chest rose and fell as he stared at us, realizing Perla wasn’t going to budge. She was going to stay right there, acting as a shield for a girl she wasn’t even related to.
“Fine,” Doctor Vance hissed, “Fine. We will let the Don decide if he wants his daughter to remain a broken freak for the rest of her life.”
He turned on his heel, stepping over the scattered metal tools, and walked over to the heavy black phone sitting on his desk. He slammed his hand onto the receiver, lifting it and forcefully dialing a number.
