Chapter 435
Alessia looked up from cutting pancakes for Jewel, “Why?”
Vincenzo took a sip, “I invited Raphael’s girlfriend to dinner tonight.”
Across from me, Gianna went completely still then all hell broke loose.
“WHAT?”
“Raphael has a girlfriend?”
“Since when?”
“How?”
“Who is she?”
“Is she real?”
“Did somebody verify this?”
Alessia looked at me, “I don’t believe it.”
I raised an eyebrow, “Believe what?”
“That you have a girlfriend.”
The entire table immediately agreed, “Yeah.”
“No chance.”
“Impossible.”
“He’s too weird,” Dante made a disgusted face.
“Thank you, Dante.”
Alessia looked genuinely suspicious, “What is her name?”
I continued eating.
“What does she look like?”
I reached for my coffee.
“How old is she?”
I drank the coffee.
“Does she have pictures?”
I closed my eyes.
“Oh my God, does she know what family she’s marrying into?” Madeleine asked, “Because you have to tell her.”
Silvio shook his head, “I don’t believe it. It’s probably just some new high-tech robot he built in his lab to take care of his needs, or he’s finally just customized a blow-up doll with a working mouth.”
“Children at the table!” Claire warned, glaring at him.
Vincenzo looked disgustingly amused, “I assure you she’s real and he’s serious about her too.”
Alessia frowned, “What do you mean serious?”
Vincenzo looked directly at me, “He put his hands on me.”
“You WHAT?” Dante nearly choked. “You hit Vincenzo?”
“No.”
“You punched him?”
“No.”
“You stabbed him?”
“No.”
Adriano looked delighted, “He body-checked the head of the Chicago Outfit.”
I closed my eyes, and sighed, “Adriano.”
“He launched himself across the room.”
“Adriano.”
“Like an emotionally unstable linebacker.”
“Adriano.”
Claire turned toward her husband, “Raphael shoved you?”
“Alessia.”
She looked ready to climb across the table then suddenly she sat back. A huge smile spreading across her face, ” Oh, thank God.”
I frowned.
“Put a ring on her immediately.”
The entire table burst out laughing.
Alessia nodded confidently, “I’m serious. We may never get another opportunity. Raphael finally found a woman willing to tolerate him. So lock it down immediately. I’ve waited years for this.”
Luca nodded, “I honestly thought he’d die alone like me.”
“Thank you,” I said flatly.
Dante shrugged, “I thought he’d eventually marry a laptop.”
“Or a spreadsheet,” Adriano added.
“Or a security camera,” Luca said.
“Or that snake,” Dante finished.
“Medusa deserves better,” Adriano replied immediately.
I closed my eyes, counted to three. When I opened them again, Gianna was already looking at me from across the table. The sight hit me harder than it should have.
For one brief second, her eyes locked onto mine then she immediately looked away like she regretted it the second it happened.
Something ugly twisted low in my chest. The questions kept coming, the jokes, the theories and the endless fucking interrogation.
And suddenly I’d had enough, “She’s not coming!” I snapped, just hard enough to cut through every conversation at the table.
The effect was immediate. Every head turned toward me. And the entire room went silent.
Alessia frowned, “Why?”
I looked back at my coffee and said the words as evenly as I could, “She ended things last night.”
