"Oh, wow." Red’s mouth fell open slightly as he listened to Marshal’s confession. "He really did sing, huh?"
He glanced at the others, but they merely shrugged. Then, all of them turned toward Marshal.
The man was still slumped on the ground, staring up at the couple towering over him.
"I’m telling you the truth!" Marshal screamed, wincing as pain shot through his ear. "That’s all I know!"
Lucian narrowed his eyes before turning to his wife. "What do you think?"
Marshal’s information wasn’t particularly detailed, but that wasn’t surprising. Considering Memphis had secured a position in the High Chamber and prepared a decoy in case everything went south, Lucian doubted he would tell Marshal everything.
Lucian hadn’t expected him to. Still, he knew Marshal had to know at least a thing or two.
The only question was whether Marshal had told them everything he knew.
Ashley studied Marshal for a moment before nodding. "It seems he’s telling the truth."
"See?" Marshal laughed nervously. "Now you’ll let me go, right?"
"Huh?" Ashley blinked.
At the emotionless look on her face, Marshal’s heart nearly stopped before plummeting into his stomach. Scott, who was being restrained nearby, exhaled heavily.
"Please don’t kill him," he pleaded. The natural pride in his voice remained, but it was now tempered with humility. "You’ve already taken down the Di Carpios. He’ll never recover from this."
Marshal nodded profusely. "He’s right! How could I possibly recover from this? Everything is gone!"
He crawled forward on his knees and clung to Ashley’s leg.
"Daughter, I know I wasn’t the perfect father," he said. "But you understand that I only did what was best for you, hmm? You wouldn’t have become this remarkable if it weren’t for me!"
Everyone in the madam’s faction snorted, staring at him with ridicule.
The fact that he had sent a young Ashley to a base ruled by perverted men was already enough to prove that nothing he had done was for her own good.
"I’m going to break his teeth," Tank breathed, his eyes glinting dangerously.
His colleagues only knew about the base, but Tank had an idea of how she had been conditioned. He had been there in the church and overheard the conversation between Ashley and the priest.
"Ashley, my daughter." Marshal forced a desperate smile. "You understand me, don’t you? I only wanted you to learn the ins and outs of the family business because I always knew you would become my heir."
Ashley let out a light chuckle before glancing at Scott.
"I’ll think about it," she said, shifting her attention back to Marshal. "But first, tell me—what kind of leash do you have on that guy?"
She jerked a thumb over her shoulder, referring to Scott.
Marshal’s gaze shifted toward Scott before returning to her. Then, he shook his head.
"Nothing."
"Come on!" Rum shouted from the car. "Just tell us! I’m dying to know!"
To be honest, Ashley was dying to know as well. Lucian couldn’t deny that he was curious. In fact, everyone present was equally intrigued.
It was the kind of mystery that had lived rent-free in their heads for far too long.
Scott lowered his head, his jaw tightening.
"You don’t want to tell me?" Ashley asked, tilting her head. "Fine, then—"
The moment she moved the pistol in her hand, Marshal grabbed her leg.
"I’ll tell you!" he cried in panic. "I’ll tell you. Just—just put that down."
"It’s... it’s..." Marshal cleared his throat, his gaze darting between Ashley and Scott. "It’s family."
Well, that was anticlimactic, Ashley thought.
