I hopped into the shower, turning it on and immediately turning it off. I could smell him on me. It was that thick, heavy reek of wet dog and old meat that all wolves carried.

If it wasn't for the scent blocker Aldric had planted under my skin, I wouldn't be able to do any of this shit.

The blocker had literally been planted under my skin like a birth control stick. I remembered being back in Aldric’s room at the palace. A doctor had come in to do the whole process. I’d complained to Aldric, screaming that I couldn’t bear the pain of my skin being torn open to insert a stick. I’d asked if there was any other way.

Aldric had been painfully patient. He told me this was the only way that would actually work.

I’d shaken my head, looking at Aldric and swallowing hard. "Wolves are disgusting!"

I’d yelped then. The doctor—who was obviously a wolf—looked up at Aldric and then me looking offended. His scent was the first thing I’d picked up when he walked into the room. He looked clean enough—his white coat was pressed and he didn't have dirt under his fingernails—but to my nose, he was a walking carcass. I couldn’t help it. The only thing was that after being around them for so long, I could actually hold my gut from throwing up. But the smell was still terrible.

Aldric didn't move from his spot by the window. He didn't raise his voice or glare. He just tilted his head slightly, watching my pathetic display with that terrifying, clinical patience.

"Manners, Elara," Aldric said. The words were soft, but i could have easily been a blow.

“But he stinks!!”

Aldric didn't argue. He walked over to me, his presence a sudden, cool relief against the doctor’s rotten heat.

"The doctor is here for the procedure we discussed," Aldric said, ignoring my complaint.

I looked at the small, sterile-looking tray the doctor was setting on the table. There was a thin, white stick sitting next to a scalpel. It looked like a piece of plastic or bone, no bigger than a match.
