"Aiden."
I said his name in surprise, pushing my chair back.
Alexander, who had been standing beside me, immediately reached out to steady me as I rose, making sure I didn’t step on the hem of my gown.
"Congratulations, Alicia."
Aiden’s smile was genuine as he pulled me into a brief, one-armed hug.
"Thank you."
"When did you arrive?"
"Just a moment ago."
He gave me an apologetic smile.
"I’m sorry I missed the ceremony. I was in New York for a shoot when I received the invitation. I couldn’t leave in the middle of filming, so I had to wait until we finished before I could take a break and come here."
I smiled warmly.
"It’s alright, Aiden. I’m just happy you made it."
Before I could say anything else, I felt Alexander’s arm slide around my waist.
The gesture immediately drew Aiden’s attention.
"Alexander."
"You made it."
Aiden nodded, his smile widening.
"Congratulations. I wish you both a long and happy life together."
There was nothing forced about his words. His sincerity was so obvious that warmth spread through me.
"Thank you."
Mr. and Mrs. Firestone soon joined us, offering their congratulations as well, before we eventually returned to our seats.
Aiden seemed particularly excited to finally meet Aimy, and she took to him almost immediately.
I had him sit beside me, leaving me between him and Alexander.
As the reception continued, I quickly realized that the wedding meant different things to different people.
For us, it was about finally celebrating our marriage on our own terms.
For some of the guests, however, it was also an opportunity to get closer to the Blackwood family.
Whenever people approached us to offer their congratulations, many of them would linger afterward, attempting to steer the conversation toward business.
Alexander remained polite but firm, turning down every attempt.
Not long after we settled back into our seats, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and seemed ready to ignore it, but I gently nodded toward the phone.
"You should check. It might be important."
He hesitated for a moment before finally answering.
A few seconds later, he excused himself and stepped away from the table.
I turned back toward Aiden.
"How have you been?"
He smiled faintly.
"I’m fine, as you can see."
His gaze softened.
"Even better now that I know you’re happy."
His eyes drifted toward my family sitting on the other side of the table.
"So... you found your family."
I followed his gaze before nodding.
"I did."
A small smile touched my lips.
"I used to wonder what my life would have been like if the Blackwoods hadn’t taken me in. I thought I would spend the rest of my life alone."
My gaze wandered toward my family.
"But somehow, I found them at the exact moment I needed them most."
The thought of how lonely I had felt after Nana’s death briefly crossed my mind.
"When I found out you disappeared..." Aiden’s voice softened, drawing my attention back to him.
"I kept wondering what could have possibly made you leave everything behind and disappear like that."
He let out a quiet chuckle, though there was something distant in his expression.
"For a long time, I even blamed myself. I thought maybe I should have taken you away from Alexander when I had the chance. Maybe I could have protected you from everything that happened."
His gaze shifted toward Aimy, who was now sitting happily beside Anna.
"But seeing you now..." His smile returned, gentler this time. "Seeing how happy you are, I think I finally understand."
He looked back at me.
"Maybe everything was simply meant to happen this way."
I remained silent because I had finally understood what he meant.
"And strangely enough..." He paused, almost as though he were surprised by his own admission. "Seeing you beside another man doesn’t hurt as much anymore."
His eyes softened.
"Because you’re happy."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
It seemed he hadn’t realized what he had revealed until he saw the expression on my face.
"Sorry," he said quickly. "I didn’t mean—"
"I’m sorry it had to turn out this way," I interrupted softly.
He smiled and shook his head.
"What are you saying? Don’t think too much about it. I’ve moved on already."
He paused before adding gently,
"Alicia, I’m genuinely happy that you’ve finally found a family of your own. That’s all. So please don’t misunderstand me."
I studied him quietly.
For the first time, I couldn’t see the sadness that had once lingered behind his smiles.
There was no longing in his eyes.
No trace of the feelings that had once made everything between us so complicated.
He simply looked... at peace.
And somehow, that brought me more relief than I expected.
I had never wanted his feelings for me to become something that kept him trapped in the past.
Now, looking at him, I finally knew they wouldn’t.
Whatever feelings Aiden had once carried for me, he had finally let them go.
And perhaps that was the closure we both needed.
A few minutes later, Alexander returned and leaned toward me.
"You need to come change, Alicia."
I looked up at him, confused.
"Now?"
He nodded.
"There’s somewhere we need to be."
He helped me stand from my seat before politely excusing us. I didn’t ask any questions as he led me toward the other side of the building, where a private elevator took us upstairs to the hotel’s VIP suites.
