TWO WEEKS LATER
Warm sunlight filtered through the curtains, spilling across the bed.
I stirred slightly before opening my eyes.
For a brief moment, I simply lay there, staring at the ceiling.
The space beside me was already empty.
Alexander was gone.
I frowned.
Usually, even if he woke before me, he’d stay in bed for a while or leave me a note.
I reached for my phone.
8:12 a.m.
There was only one unread message.
Alexander
"Good morning, baby. I had to leave early today. Don’t worry about anything and enjoy your morning. I’ll see you later."
A faint smile tugged at my lips.
Enjoy my morning?
What an odd thing to say.
For the past two weeks, Alexander had been unusually busy. Things at Blackwood Dominion had been running normally, so I couldn’t understand what was keeping him occupied or why he wouldn’t tell me about it.
I sat up and glanced around the room before letting out a quiet sigh.
Maybe I was just overthinking things.
Alexander was the chairman of Blackwood Dominion. Managing an empire that large came with endless responsibilities. There were probably many things he simply didn’t have the time to explain to me.
After washing up, I headed downstairs.
The villa felt busier than usual.
Staff hurried from one place to another, yet strangely, the house itself seemed... different.
I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Some of the decorations that normally occupied the hallways were gone, and even a few pieces of furniture seemed to have been moved.
It wasn’t obvious enough to attract attention immediately, but after living here for a while, I noticed.
Mrs. Sarah spotted me first.
"Good morning, Mrs. Blackwood."
"Good morning."
I glanced around once more.
"Is something happening today?"
She smiled politely.
"Just the usual cleaning, ma’am."
I nodded, but something about the way she answered made me pause.
Before I could think any further, little footsteps echoed through the hall.
"Mummy!"
Aimy came running toward me.
I bent down just in time to catch her in my arms.
"Good morning, sweetheart."
She giggled before planting a kiss on my cheek.
Breakfast was surprisingly quiet.
Alexander wasn’t there.
Neither was Maria.
Instead, Sarah helped Aimy eat while the villa, which had been bustling moments earlier, suddenly became strangely calm after I came downstairs.
Odd.
I didn’t mind asking about Maria because she often went out for shopping in Saturday mornings.
After breakfast, I decided to call Alexander.
The phone rang once.
Then twice.
Finally...
Voicemail.
I frowned.
That almost never happened.
A second later, my phone buzzed.
Alexander
"In a meeting. Can’t answer. I’ll call later."
A meeting... on a Saturday?
I let out a quiet sigh.
Chairman Blackwood...
Always busy.
Around ten o’clock, I decided to catch up on some work.
I went to Alexander’s study first, but the door was locked.
I searched for the spare key, only to realize it wasn’t where it usually was.
That was strange.
Alexander had never locked the study from me.
Shrugging it off, I returned to our bedroom.
The room was spacious enough to have a work desk, so I opened my laptop and immersed myself in work.
Aimy was happily occupied with her kitten, and Sarah was taking good care of her, so I didn’t have much to worry about.
Almost an hour later, a knock sounded on the bedroom door.
"Come in."
The door opened slightly.
"Mrs. Blackwood," one of the maids said respectfully, "you have a visitor."
I looked up in surprise.
"A visitor?"
"Who is it?"
She shook her head apologetically.
"I’m not sure, ma’am."
Then she hesitated before adding,
"But... I think it’s someone you know. Security let her into the villa."
She was right.
The security team would never allow a stranger inside without Alexander’s permission.
"I’ll be there in a moment."
"Yes, ma’am."
The maid quietly closed the door behind her.
I shut my laptop, picked up my phone, and headed downstairs, curiosity slowly replacing the uneasiness I’d been feeling since morning.
"Is she coming?"
A familiar female voice drifted into the hallway just as I stepped into the living room.
My brows furrowed.
"Ariana?"
She immediately turned around, and the maid quietly excused herself, leaving the two of us alone.
I stared at her in surprise.
"What are you doing here?"
She smiled, though there was something unusually secretive about it.
"I came to pick you up."
"Pick me up?"
I blinked.
"How did you even know where I live?"
Ever since returning to Velaridge City, I,Sophie and Ariana had only met once when when Sophie needed a custom-made gown for an event,so we went to the designer together.
From there, Jim had driven Aimy and me back home while the two of them left in their own car.
Non of them had ever had the time to visit the villa.
Ariana waved the question away.
"This is Chairman Blackwood’s residence."
"It isn’t that difficult to find."
"But don’t worry about that right now."
She walked over and gently took my hand.
"Come with me."
"There’s somewhere we need to be."
I frowned.
"Somewhere?"
"Yes."
Without another explanation, she began leading me toward the front door.
"Wait, Ariana."
