Chapter 439 Her Neighbor
Third–person POV:
Silence hung between them for a few seconds.
Samuel set his glass down and looked straight at her. “Qid I do something wrong?”
Laila’s hand paused mid–turn on the menu.
“No,” she said.
“Then why won’t you look at me?”
“I’m looking at the menu.”
“The menu looks better than I do?”
Laila didn’t answer.

Samuel stood, walked over, and sat down beside her.
Not across from her anymore, but right next to her.
There was barely a fist’s worth of space between them.
Laila’s body tensed, but she didn’t move away.

“Laila.” His voice dropped, softer now, more coaxing than questioning. “Just tell me what I did wrong. If you don’t say anything, I
won’t know.”
Laila stayed quiet for a long time.
“You didn’t do anything wrong,” she finally said, her tone flat. “It’s my problem.”
“What problem?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Laila-”
“I really don’t want to talk about it.” (2
Samuel studied her. Her profile was tight, chin slightly lifted in that stubborn, shut–down way that meant she wasn’t budging.
He knew that look. When she didn’t want to talk, no one could pry it out of her.
But he also knew something had changed. She’d been fine last night. He stepped out to take that mind–link–call, came back to a locked door, and she was different.
Did Thandle that call wrong, or did she get the wrong idea?
He took a slow breath and swallowed whatever he’d been about to say
“Okay,” he said. “If you don’t want to talk, I won’t push.”
He paused.
“But I need you to know, whatever it is, I’m here. When you’re ready, you can tell me anytime.”
Laila’s fingers traced the menu absently.
She lifted her eyes and looked at him.
For a split second, her lips parted, like she might say something.
But in the end, she just hummed and lowered her gaze again.
Samuel didn’t press.
He went back to his seat, poured her a glass of water, and gently slid it toward her.
Laila looked at the glass, something soft nudging at her chest.

Frostfang Pack.
After making the rounds with the nobles, Damian finally remembered to stop by and see Estelle.
By coincidence, Titus had come by today as well.
Estelle dismissed all the servants and smiled. “What a rare day. Damian and Mr. Whitmore, both of you here at once.”
Titus sat back in his chair, carrying himself with more authority than usual. “Yeah. Doesn’t happen often.”
Damian took a sip of his coffee. “This is good. Way better than what we get at Bloodmoon Pack.”
“It’s hard to come by,” Estelle said. “I only bring it out when it’s worth it.”
Damian looked her over. “You’ve lost weight. Someone giving you trouble?”
“Just one. I dealt with it. They’ve learned their place.” Estelle’s tone stayed light.
Damian nodded, setting his cup down as he shifted topics. “You did well, Estelle. Thunder Pack is finished.”
r
“Yeah. Though Lillian paid the price.” Estelle glanced at Titus. “Mr. Whitmore, don’t hold it against me. Keeping her there would’ve only helped Thunder Pack.”
Titus forced a smile.
“Your original plan was flawed,” Estelle went on. “Sending Lillian to win them over was never going to work. Those old families are loyal to the crown, and Shawn’s too arrogant to bend. Better to wipe them out.”
Titus towered his gaze, but the veins in his hands stood out against the aforest. “You’re right.”
“As for Lillian, leave her be. She rather stay with Laila than come back with you. Not much of a loss,”
Titus said nothing, but the tension in him was obvious.
Lillian was his daughter. Hearing her dismissed like that still struck a nerve
Damian shifted the conversation. “Enough about Thunder Pack. That’s done. I came this time for Maris. I already sent people to assassinate her, but Laila stepped in. I lost several good operatives.”
“Killing Maris now won’t be easy,” Estelle said. “Vaughn has people protecting her in secret.”
Titus added, “She’s cautious. Never steps out of the den.”
“What about bribing someone inside? Poison?” Damian asked.
“Tried it. Didn’t work,” Titus said. “She’s too careful.”
Damian smiled faintly at him. “Then we need to move fast. The Alpha King of Solantía Kingdom won’t hold out much longer. Our people are already close to Casper. He’s been itching to avenge his brother.
“When he marches in with his army, we can blame everything on Vaughn. Say he appointed the wrong general and refused to admit it. That’ll force him off the throne.”
Titus thought for a moment. “Still, killing Maris right now is difficult. King Vaughn is protecting her, and Laila and the others are watching her closely.”
“We’ll figure something out,” Damian said, lifting his coffee again,
Titus nodded.
In the quiet that followed, Estelle suddenly spoke. “Oh, right. There’s something interesting. King Vaughn seems to have taken a liking to Laila.”
“That’s impossible. He didn’t object to Samuel and Laila’s marriage,” Damian said, shaking his head.
Estelle let out a cold laugh. “No. My sources say he bought the house next door to hers.”
