Chapter 596: Haughty Secretary

(Author’s POV)

"Young Alphas, you are here. Something terrible has happened. His Majesty’s grandson~ ... h~e ... he has passed away," the commando conveyed, his voice nervous and strained.

Alaric’s brows furrowed in confusion, but Dion caught onto his words immediately. He repeated, flabbergasted, "WHAT? Fa~bian Stephens died? When~ ... when did it happen?"

"Half an hour ago, Healer Hector declared. Because of that, His Majesty’s health has flared up once again. It is chaos inside," he said, rushing inside.

"Fabian is Jacob’s grandson? Since when did you know about it?" Alaric questioned, while they made their way inside, his tone full of disbelief.

"I wasn’t sure, just had an inkling. That guy’s words confirmed it for me. Now, let’s hurry up and see what in the hell happened while we were away," Dion spoke as they both made a run for it, their expressions tensed.

As they approached the room where Fabian was, they overheard several quiet, muffled sounds. Some were noticeably louder and more distinct, including Chris’s voice: "Hector Healer~... don’t blame yourself for this. You know how much Young master Fabian meant to the master. He was his only family. You understand his majesty’s health better than anyone. The sudden loss has triggered his condition once again. The high dosage was what he needed most at this moment."

Then came Iris’s nervous voice, "But~ .... but. Sedating His Majesty like this~ ...." Her words were left unfinished, as Chris interrupted, "I said, don’t worry. If anything happens, I will take full responsibility." He sounded confident and a little haughty.

Alaric and Dion’s footsteps quickened.

Outside, a few servants and healers were gathered; each one had distress written all over their faces.

Standing at the far corner, one of them uttered, their voice barely audible to others, "Poor young master. How can such a cruel thing happen to such a kind person? He was still young."

Another one replied, "I too feel bad for him. But honestly, everyone saw something like this coming. His Majesty has always been adamant about handing everything over to ’him.’ The business, the estates, the authority, even the throne, everything .... this made him a number one target for other vampires’ hostility. Young master might share his blood, but he was only a human after all. How can he take the throne and command the vampire clans? No vampire would agree to it."

Dion stood behind them, his voice stern, "Are you done with your gossip? Should I report to your king about what you just said?"

The two servants jumped at the sudden interruption. They shuddered after seeing him and Alaric and quickly started apologizing, "Yo~ ...Young alp~ .... we are sorry, young alphas. We didn’t mean to. We are truly very sorry. Plea~se, please, don’t tell his majesty. Pleaseee~ .... we beg you. Please~ ...."

"Get the hell out of our sight," Alaric barked as they sealed their lips and hurried away, tails tucked between their legs.

Then the two brothers entered the room where Jacob was lying unconscious. Before either of them could say anything, Chris sensed their presence and turned around. His eyes narrowed instantly as his voice turned edgy and sharp, "Young Alpha Alaric, Dion~ .... where the heck have you been all this time? Master gave you full authority to see through the security matter, and you all vanished without a trace? Do you even know what has happened while you were gone? How irresponsible of you."

Neither of the two liked his tone. Something even felt off to them. Alaric was ready to give his piece of mind, but Dion shook his head. He then spoke. "We had an urgent matter to attend to. Do we need to report everything to Secretary Shadow?"

"What was so urgent, then a life at stake?" Chris spoke, his voice accusatory, "Or were you trying to run away, hiding the evidence of your crime?
