Laurence was Noelle’s whole world now.

Lilian laughed. “Jane, you’re too soft-hearted. Why’d you tell Noelle so soon?”

Noelle said, “Master, you almost scared me to death.”

“You wouldn’t flinch even if a mountain fell on you, but the moment you heard you might be transferred away from Laurence, your face went pale. Is Laurence the only thing you care about?”

Lilian gave her apprentice a look.

Laurence chimed in. “Of course I’m the only thing in Noelle’s heart. She’s the only one in mine too.

“Noelle, Master was only trying to scare you. I’ll never replace you, and no one could either. But from now on, if there’s danger again, you have to give me a chance to throw a few punches. You know how it feels to be itching to punch something.”

“If you need to step in, that danger would have to be enormous. Do you actually want to be in that sort of danger?” Noelle responded helplessly.

Laurence grinned. “I want our lives to be peaceful, without ever facing danger again.”

Jane steered the conversation back on track. It was good enough that the two youngsters knew they had each other in their hearts.

“On the surface, yes. As for what tricks they’ll pull behind the scenes, who knows? We cross that bridge when we get there. I’m not scared of them.”

Jane nodded. “That’s natural. They’ve run the family for thirty years. There’s no way they’d simply hand everything over so easily. You two need to be extra careful from now on. It’s always the petty people who are the most dangerous.”

“I know, Mom.”

“As long as you two trust each other, anyone trying to drive a wedge between you won’t stand a chance.”

Laurence looked at Noelle, who looked back at him.

Noelle blushed harder, stammering, “Mom, I-I… I don’t know how to act.”

The words Lilian and Jane told her that day resurfaced in her mind, making her heart race again.

Did Laurence love her?
