Noah and Sienna shared a striking resemblance.
Their eyes and jaws were almost identical, but Noah lacked the intense, wound-up tension that defined his sister. Instead, he radiated a lazy, couldn't-care-less slackness.
Hearing Noah's assumption, Sienna's face instantly burned hot.
A long-forgotten, intensely humiliating sense of mortification swallowed her whole.
"Noah, shut your mouth!"
She reached out to yank him back, but she was too late.
Noah wrenched the car door open, planted himself in the plush backseat, and stuck his head out the window.
"Man, this is sick! Real leather! So comfortable. My sister struck gold with you!"
Sienna's face flushed violently. She lunged forward and physically dragged Noah out of the car.
"Get out, right now."
Noah stumbled as she yanked him onto the pavement, looking completely bewildered.
"What the hell is your problem?"
Sienna pointed a trembling finger at him.
"You stand right here, and do not move."
She spun around and marched toward Finn, doing everything she could to mask her spiraling panic.
They stood mere feet apart.
The blinding sun cast Finn's tall shadow over the pavement, stretching out to blanket her.
"Thank you for what you did today."
Finn's dark eyes sparkled, a soft, eager smile touching his lips as he opened his mouth to reply.
Sienna threw up a hand to stop him.
"But 'thank you' is all I can give you. You saw it for yourself. My family is a total disaster. Aside from a decent job, I am completely broke. I have nothing."
Her voice quivered violently, and she drew in a ragged breath.
"But you're different. You have limitless wealth, a soaring career, and untouchable status. We live in completely different universes. I am so unbelievably exhausted, Finn. I can't be tied to you anymore. So please, stop interfering in my life and just stay away from me."
By the time the last word left her mouth, her voice was completely shredded.
She didn't wait for him to reply.
She spun on her heel and grabbed Noah by the arm.
"Walk."
Brilliant, hyper-capable, someone who could bulldoze through any obstacle.
When he got bullied as a kid, she was the one who hunted down the bullies to settle the score.
When he bombed his high school entrance exams, she was the one who pulled every string she had to find him a school.
Even today, rotting in a precinct cell for twenty-four hours, he hadn't panicked. Because he knew for an absolute fact that his sister would come back and burn the world down to pull him out.
"Sienna..." his voice went completely hoarse.
Sienna refused to look at him anymore.
She turned her back to him and kept walking.
Noah trailed silently behind her, keeping his mouth shut.
He watched the rigid line of her back.
Her spine was completely straight, but her steps were slow, heavy, as though fighting against an invisible, crushing weight.
The precinct was miles away from the hospital, and there were no direct bus lines.
The blazing June sun battered the asphalt, radiating waves of suffocating heat.
Within ten minutes, the back of Noah's shirt was soaked with sweat.
