Chapter 38
Chapter 38
Kane’s POV
I bent down and scooped Aurora up off the wet floor.
She was dead weight in my arms, soaking through my jacket, cold water running down my sleeves and dripping onto the tile. I held her against my chest, shifted my grip under her knees and back, and took two steps toward the corridor.
That’s when I heard the footsteps. I looked up.
Silas was already halfway there. His eyes locked on Aurora in my arms when he saw us, pupils blown wide, his whole body freezing for half a second like something had driven a spike through him. Then he closed the distance quickly.
“What did you do to her?” His voice came out rough.
I met his eyes. “She was locked in the restroom,” I said. “Someone dumped a bucket of cold water on her from outside. I found her like this.”
His gaze moved from my face to Aurora’s pale lips, white against the dark wet hair plastered across her cheeks. His throat worked. Then he reached out his arms. “Give her to me.”
I didn’t argue. I shifted her weight, careful with her head, and passed her over He caught her instantly, arms closing around her so tight I

>could see his forearms tense under his sleeves. Aurora’s head fell
against his shoulder. Her wet hair brushed his jaw.
He looked down at her face. Something guilt flickered across his expression. Then he turned to leave..
“Thanks,” he said, over his shoulder, “I’ll repay you.”
I stood where I was, water still dripping from my cuffs onto the floor.
“Don’t wait for later,” I said. “There’ll be plenty of chances. She’s going to be working with me full-time for the next month. You can thank me in person then.”
His footsteps stopped. His arm holding Aurora tightened. But he didn’ turn around, didn’t say anything.
He walked into the elevator. The doors closed behind him.
I stood there alone in the empty corridor for a moment, then I turned and walked out.
Aurora’s POV
Warm water surrounded me, its heat slowly melting away the cold that had settled deep in my bones.
I didn’t open my eyes right away. Warm steam filled the bathroom, the air damp against my skin. Water lapped gently at my chest while someone adjusted the faucet with careful hands.
After a moment, I slowly opened my eyes.

>The ceiling was white and blurry. I blinked, and the blur sharpened into Silas’s face. He was leaning over the tub, braced on one arm, looking down at me with his brows still knitted together. His tiger ear were completely flat against his hair, and his tail was wrapped tight
around his own wrist.
“What happened?” My voice came out cracked and quiet.
He reached out and brushed the wet hair off my cheek.
“You were locked in the restroom,” he said. “Someone poured cold water on you. Kane found you, and I brought you back.”
I frowned as everything started coming back.
“Where’s Kane?” I asked.
“He left.”
Silas sat down on the edge of the bathtub. He tested the water temperature with his fingers, eyes fixed on the surface, not on me. Then he spoke.
“So I heard you’re going to be working with him for the next month.”
I blinked. “How do you know?”
