Chapter 37

Aurora’s POV

Kane’s eyes dropped to the stack of papers in my hands – the interview outline I’d just picked up off the floor.

He adjusted his stance slightly, hands in his jacket pockets, and said. “To make the interview run smoother, I’ve already proposed a plan to your boss.”

“You’ll be shadowing me for the next month. Foundation office visits. Shelter rounds. Meals. Everything.” He paused. “Of course, except living together.” He looked at me, “Can you handle that arrangement?”

I stood there. The papers in my hand were still slightly creased from the fall. My thumb ran along the edge of the top sheet, back and forth

once.

“Yes,” I said. “No problem.”

The corner of his mouth lifted. “There are still some details I need to confirm with your boss. I won’t take up more of your time.”

He turned and walked down the corridor. His silhouette disappeared around the corner.

I stood in the same spot for a moment, looked down at the neatly stacked papers in my hand, and took a deep breath before heading back to my desk.

rubbed the space between my eyebrows. “That’s not the point. The point is I have to tell Silas.”

Mia patted my shoulder sympathetically. “Good luck with that. Your werebeast’s vinegar jar is about to overflow.”

I sighed. The rest of the afternoon, I organized questions and rehearsed opening lines in my head — trying out different ways to tell Silas without triggering a full meltdown. But no matter how I phrased it, the core message was always the same.

I’m going to be spending every day with another beastman for a month.

That sentence, in any language, is not calm-inducing.

I set my pen down, rubbed my temples, and sighed.

“Okay,” I said. “I’ll just go to the restroom. Wait for me downstairs?”

He nodded. “Take your time.”

I watched him walk toward the elevators, then I turned and headed for the restroom at the end of the corridor.

The door clicked shut behind me.

I didn’t notice the shadow that slipped past the wall outside.

I was inside the restroom when I heard a soft metallic click. Something wedged into the door handle from the outside.

I walked over, turned the handle. It didn’t budge.
