I Rejected My Obsessive Werebeast novel Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Aurora’s POV

I woke up in bed, wrapped in a blanket I didn’t remember pulling over myself. The space beside me was cold. Silas wasn’t there.

I sat up, rubbed my eyes, and padded downstairs.

He was in the kitchen. The smell of butter and something frying hit me before I even reached the doorway. I leaned against the frame and watched him for a moment, his back to me, spatula in hand, humming something low under his breath.

He must’ve heard me, because he glanced over his shoulder. His expression softened instantly.

You can go back to sleep if you want,he said. I’ll wake you when it’s ready.

I just walked over and wrapped my arms around his waist from behind, pressing my face into his back.

He turned around in the circle of my arms. He looked down at me for a second, then he pulled me against his chest and held me.

Neither of us said anything.

The eggs were sizzling on the stove, and their aroma drifted toward me.

When breakfast finally hit the table, I looked down at my plate and burst out laughing.

The fried egg was heartshaped. Not perfectly, but obviously on purpose.

Silas’s ears went pink. He shoved a fork toward me without comment./

didn’t press him. I just ate it, every bite, and smiled the whole time.

After breakfast, I picked up my phone.

The screen was flooded with notifications I hadn’t seen sincewell, since the basement. I scrolled through them, deleting spam, flagging a few things, until one email from the Matching Center caught my eye.

Subject. Binding Confirmation & Related Notice.

I opened it.

The formal binding certificate was attached as a PDF. My name and Silas s printed side by side. I stared at it for longer than I needed to.

Below that was a second notice. Connor Fletcher’s reassignment public notice periodhad officially begun. Seven days. If another human submitted an application to claim him within that window, he’d be reassigned. Otherwise, after the period expired, he’d be transferred to the colosseum per standard procedure.

I scrolled down to close the email and paused.

There was a small note at the bottom, in finer print.

The original owner may exercise Priority Reclamation Rightsduring the public notice period, if desired.

Silas’s footsteps came up behind me. He stopped at the back of the couch and looked down at the screen. He read the same line I’d just read.

He didn’t say anything. He just waited.

I set the phone down on the table, faceup, and turned to him.

I’m not applying,I said.

He nodded, leaned down and pressed a kiss to the top of my head.

Okay,he said.

That was it.

In the afternoon, Silas said he needed to go into the city to pick something up.

You coming?he asked from the doorway, keys in hand.

I grabbed my bag.

He drove us to a mall on the west side, parked, and led me straight into a jewelry store on the second floor. A sales assistant spotted us immediately and hurried over.

Silas pulled a receipt from his pocket and handed it to her. The new order should be ready.

While she went to the back to retrieve it, I turned to him slowly. You ordered another one?

He shrugged, looking suddenly very interested in the display case beside him.

The assistant came back with a dark blue velvet box and set it on the counter. She opened it.

Inside lay a ringsleek silver band, simple and clean, set with a pale blue gemstone that caught the light and threw it back in soft flashes.

Silas picked up the box and turned to me. Yesterday’s foil ring can retire

now,he said.

He took my left hand, gently slid the candywrapper ring off my finger, and set it on the counter. Then he lifted the new ring and slid it onto the same finger.

It fit perfectly.

I looked down at the pale blue stone catching the overhead light and smiled. Then I picked up the foil ring from the counter and folded it carefully into a small square, tucking it into my pocket.
