A few days prior, Grandpa Vaughn had finally been discharged from the hospital. Following his doctor's strict orders for light exercise, he was taking a slow evening stroll through his sprawling garden.
Suddenly, the main estate doors were flung open. A staff member rushed across the lawn, their footsteps heavy with blind panic.
Grandpa Vaughn turned his head, watching the man scramble over.
The servant was so hysterical he completely forgot his formalities. "The hospital just called! They said... they said..."
The Patriarch frowned sharply. "Catch your breath. Spit it out."
"Master Jorrod was in a car accident."
A massive ringing exploded in the old man's ears, rooting him to the spot.
-
At the hospital.
Standing in the pristine corridor, Uncle Theron tried to soothe his father. "We pulled the traffic cams from the crash site. A group of drunk kids hit him; they're already in police custody. Thankfully, Jorrod's injuries aren't severe—mostly just lacerations and bruises."
Grandpa Vaughn fiercely rejected the optimism. "The boy is in a coma! How the hell is that 'not severe'?"
"Physically, he's fine. As for the coma, the doctors expect him to wake up by tomorrow."
The Patriarch let out a long, heavy sigh. "Good."
His youngest grandson seemed to be cursed this year, surviving one brutal disaster after another.
He was seriously considering hiring a psychic to cleanse his bad luck.
"There is one thing, though," Theron recalled, his expression shifting. "The crash was bizarre. According to the footage, Jorrod wasn't driving fast at all, and the other car was visibly losing control from a mile away. Realistically speaking..."
He didn't need to finish. The old man instantly grasped the implication and cut his son off. "What, you think he just sat there and let himself get T-boned? Is the boy an idiot?"
Theron simply nodded. "We'll ask him when he wakes up tomorrow."
But tomorrow never came.
Theron suddenly remembered a crucial detail. "Dr. Jacqueline Shaw mentioned to me a while back that Jorrod had been undergoing intense neurological treatments."
The entire family turned to stare at him.
Meeting their bewildered eyes, Theron explained, "When Jorrod got into that first accident months ago, he completely lost the memories of the time he was missing. He's been putting himself through extreme medical therapies to get them back. If he's suffering from a psychological break, it's likely tied to that."
The old man was thoroughly confused. "So he forgot some things—who cares? He's perfectly healthy now. Why would he torture himself over some missing time?"
"Oh! Oh, my god," Madeline gasped, piecing it together. "That was when he got that girlfriend, wasn't it?"
Grandpa Vaughn froze, staring at her in shock. "A girlfriend?"
"Yes! Her name was Sienna or something. They were head over heels for each other, but for whatever reason, they eventually broke up."
The Patriarch finally understood.
So, during those missing months, his grandson hadn't been shacked up at Silas Lester's house at all.
