At that horrifying thought, every hair on Lyra's body stood on end.

She whipped out her phone and dialed Maxwell. He rejected her calls over and over until he finally picked up with an irritated snap. "What the hell do you want now?"-

She didn't care about his horrible attitude. "Maxwell, I... I'm locked inside the ballroom! Get someone to—"

"Enough." He viciously cut her off. "Is this really the time to play games with Aria? She's injured. I'm taking her to the hospital. Whatever this is, it can wait until I get back."

With that, the line went dead.

"Maxwell? Max? Hello?!"

She screamed into the receiver, but only the dial tone answered back.

She tried to call him again, but the connection completely failed.

The flames roared with terrifying fury, turning the room into a suffocating inferno. Gripping her phone helplessly, absolute despair threatened to swallow her whole.

Why? Why couldn't he give her even a shred of basic human trust?

Gritting her teeth, Lyra hoisted a heavy chair and rushed to the window, smashing it against the glass with all her strength.

But the custom-reinforced glass was virtually indestructible. She pounded at it relentlessly, only managing to create a tiny web of cracks. On the verge of a total breakdown, she swung the chair one last time with everything she had.

Smash!

A dull thud reverberated as the immense recoil threw her backward. Her head slammed brutally against the sharp corner of the wall, and blood immediately poured down her face.

A blinding wave of agony washed over her before everything faded into pitch black.

Leo Thorne turned around from the passenger seat to report the news.

Maxwell was looking down with deep concern at Aria, who was cradled in his arms. He frowned. "Didn't they say she already made it out of the fire?"

"That was just what the staff told me," Leo said hesitantly. It had been pure chaos. After escorting Maxwell to safety, he had tried to run back for Lyra, only to be yanked back by a bystander.
