Maxwell scoffed. "Do you honestly expect me to believe that?"
He leaned down, his dark eyes perfectly reflecting Lyra's tense silhouette.
"Lyra, just admit it. You can't bear the thought of leaving me. Stop making up these ridiculous excuses."
A contemptuous smirk played on his lips.
"Excuses?"
Lyra felt a sudden wave of exhaustion.
"We've been married for years, and you still don't know the first thing about me."
More accurately, she had never managed to secure a place in his heart, so why would he ever bother to understand her?
Realizing that reasoning with Maxwell was like talking to a brick wall, Lyra dropped the effort entirely.
"I'm done wasting my breath on you. First, I am divorcing you. Second, I am not deleting that video until you come to your senses and sign the papers. And honestly, it doesn't even matter if you refuse."
She paused, locking eyes with him, and enunciated every word.
"I will take this to court."
If playing nice didn't work, she would burn it all down.
Walking away with absolutely nothing was already her planned outcome, so she wasn't intimidated in the slightest.
"We're done here."
Lyra bypassed him completely, heading straight for the door.
Just as her hand brushed the doorknob, Maxwell's voice sliced through the air behind her.
"You cut ties with your entire family just to marry me. Tell me, what capital do you possibly have to fight me in court?"
Lyra stopped dead in her tracks.
That was the deepest, most agonizing wound in her chest.
Every time she remembered it, she wanted to rip a hole in time, travel back, and slap her younger, desperately-in-love self across the face.
"My life is none of your business."
Lyra gripped the doorknob tighter and pushed the door open to leave.
"And what about your grandmother's heirloom?"
The words struck Lyra like a physical blow.
She whipped around, finding Maxwell standing there, watching her with a calm, predatory gaze.
