"Why put yourself through all this?"
But faced with Lyra's pleading gaze, he couldn't bring himself to refuse.
"Fine, I promise I won't bring it up on my own. But if they press me, I might not be able to hold out, and I'll have to tell them everything."
Lyra offered a radiant smile. "That's more than enough."
Thomas was about to say something else when his phone rang. Excusing himself, he stepped aside to take the call.
When he returned, his expression was serious.
"Lyra, something came up at home, and I need to head back to handle it. If you need anything, call me anytime."
Hearing this, Lyra didn't try to keep him and walked him to the door.
Watching his retreating figure, she slowly clenched her fists and finally voiced the question she had been dying to ask.
"Thomas... how is Lucas?"
Thomas paused and turned back to face her.
Under her intense gaze, he smiled a bit sadly. "I don't know the full details myself. Lucas has been stationed with the military ever since you got married. He hasn't been home in a very long time."
She had made such a massive scene back then; looking back now, they must all be so profoundly disappointed in her.
"Alright, I understand. Safe travels, Thomas."
Thomas nodded and turned toward the elevators.
Once he disappeared from sight, Lyra finally retreated back into her room.
Sitting on the sofa, her thoughts drifted back to when she was fourteen.
It was her freshman year of high school. She had been walking through an alley near the school when a group of thugs cornered her.
If Maxwell hadn't shown up that day, who knew what would have happened.
That was the day she met Maxwell, and the day she started falling for him.
That love had spanned over a decade.
She had loved him so much she completely lost herself.
