Chapter one hundred and thirty seven

I walked straight to the door, my heels clicking soft against the floor of the hotel lobby. I did not look back at Victoria, not even once. In my mind I kept repeating the same thing over and over. I came here to prove I wasn’t afraid of her, and I had done exactly that. Whatever she did next was no longer my problem to carry.
Outside, the evening air had become very cool, and I wrapped my arms around myself as I waved down a cab that looked like the one I had booked. The moment I settled into the back seat, my phone was already out of my bag before the driver had even pulled off. My fingers moved fast across the screen.
“I want to see you.” I sent it to Adrian and set the phone face down on my lap, my leg bouncing the whole ride home. I kept glancing at it every few seconds, expecting a reply immediately, the kind he usually sent within minutes no matter how busy his day was but nothing came.
Not through the traffic on the bridge, not through the long queue at the junction near my estate, not even when I finally stepped out of the cab and walked into my building.
It was only as I was climbing the stairs to my floor that my phone buzzed.
“I’ll send you an address. We can meet there.”
I stopped mid step, staring at the screen, “Oh wow,” I thought. It’s like that now? I read the message twice, I couldn’t believe what I was reading, I felt like holding my hands on his neck and ask why he thought he could ask me that type of question. Before I could stop myself, I had deleted the normal reply I was typing and sent something else instead.
“Why?”
His reply came almost immediately, which somehow annoyed me even more.
“I think that’s better for now.”
I stood right there on the staircase, staring at those five words, better for now. Better how? Better for who? I climbed the rest of the stairs a little too fast, let myself into my flat, dropped my bag on the couch without even taking off my shoes, and typed back.
“I don’t want an address, Adrian. I want to talk to you. Why does it feel like you’re avoiding me?”
Three dots appeared, disappeared, appeared again. When the reply finally landed, it was one word.
“I’m not.”
“Arghhhhh.” I threw my head back and groaned out loud to an empty room. I went and took my shower, scrubbing off the stress of the day and when I came out, wrapped in my towel, dripping onto the floor, I picked my phone back up and kept trying.
I told him I wanted a proper conversation, not a meeting arranged like a business appointment, not some neutral location where he could keep his CEO face on and give me rehearsed answers. I wanted him, normal before that issue we had that night.
His replies stayed short. Each one kept breaking my heart and by the time I gave up and threw the phone onto the other side of the bed, I fell asleep angry, and I woke up angry too.
The next morning I was in a mood I couldn’t shake off no matter how hard I tried to smile through it. At work, I caught myself staring blankly at my screen more than once, my mind replaying his short cold texts. By midmorning, at least three different colleagues had stopped by my desk to ask if I was alright, and each time I forced my mouth into something close to a smile and said I was fine, just tired, just in a mood, nothing to worry about. None of them believed me, I could tell, but

Wren lunch break finally came, I didn’t even bother going to the cafeteria. I grabbed my bag, told the girl beside me I would back before break ended, and walked straight out to catch the fastest cab I could find to go to Delac Enterprise
I was a well known face so getting past security barely took any effort. A few of the front desk staff recognized nie on sight as usual and waved at me. I didn’t stop by Amanda’s office first the way I normally would, not this time. I went straight for the private corridor that led to Adrian’s office, my legs moving very fast as I could feel my heart beating. I finally got to his door and knocked twice.
“Come in,” came his voice from the other side in a serious tone and I pushed the door open.
The look on his face the moment he saw me was worth every bit of the sleepless, irritated night I had. He wasn’t alone, Felix was standing by the desk with a folder in his hand, mid sentence about something, and he stopped talking the second the door opened.
“Give us a minute, Felix,” Adrian said, his voice steady even though his eyes hadn’t left my face.
Felix didn’t need telling twice, he gathered his folder, nodded politely in my direction, and slipped out without a word, closing the door softly behind him.
