She was a light sleeper, catching even the slightest sound.
"Skye? Are you having a nightmare?" Helena Wallace asked in a low voice.
Skye Campbell showed no signs of waking up.
But the moment Helena touched her, the color drained from her face.
Skye had a fever.
And whenever she ran a fever, she was prone to falling into a life-threatening coma.
For a moment, Helena was completely at a loss.
Forcing herself to stay calm, she called Skye's doctor and explained the situation.
"Mrs. Campbell, bring the young Miss to the hospital immediately," the doctor said briskly. "I'm heading there right now."
Skye's condition was incredibly fragile.
For a normal child, a fever was a minor inconvenience.
But for her, a fever could be fatal.
Rushing to the hospital was the only option.
"Okay," Helena agreed without hesitation.
She quickly hung up the phone.
The apartment was dead silent. She was completely alone.
It was too late to call for the maids.
Even if they hurried, it would take them at least half an hour to arrive.
And half an hour could be a death sentence for Skye.
"Skye, wake up. You have a fever. We need to go to the hospital," Helena pleaded, trying to rouse her.
But the little girl only managed to crack her eyes open for a split second before her body went completely limp.
She had absolutely no strength left.
In this state, Helena simply couldn't carry her.
She couldn't afford to waste a single second.
Waiting for an ambulance would take too long.
And calling Julian Campbell was out of the question; he was currently on a flight.
Helena took a deep breath.
She tried several times, but she just couldn't lift Skye.
In that desperate moment, Sebastian Hayes's face flashed into her mind.
The little girl's skin was burning up, yet felt eerily cold to the touch.
The digital thermometer was beeping an alarming warning.
Even knowing that digital thermometers could be slightly inaccurate, the panic tightening Helena's chest didn't ease.
It only took Sebastian a few minutes to come over from next door.
The apartment doorbell rang, and she sprinted to open it.
He strode in, his gaze immediately darkening as it swept over her slip nightgown.
"Go change," he ordered coolly.
Helena looked down, suddenly realizing she was still in her sleepwear.
Standing before a man in such attire felt far too intimate.
She nodded.
Sebastian had already bypassed her, marching directly into the master bedroom and scooping Skye up into his arms.
The little girl seemed to sense it was him, offering zero resistance as she settled against him.
A moment later, Helena hurried out, fully dressed.
Skye was resting heavily against Sebastian's shoulder, her consciousness fading.
