Yardley instinctively wanted to explain himself, but the words grated on Scarlett's ears. She immediately waved him off.
"Yardley, stop trying to whitewash what you did. It can't be washed clean."
"No matter what your relationship with her is, when you crossed the line, you crossed the line. You let me and Dawn down, and nothing changes the fundamental truth of that."
Julian immediately backed her up.
"And that includes the damage you did to me as well."
"I never even liked Sylvia. The only reason I was ever forced into a relationship with her was because of you."
"And look how that turned out? The things she did caused immense pain to my entire family and dragged our name through the mud."
"Yardley, you can't just throw out right and wrong just because she's your sister. Some mistakes are so outrageously unforgivable that Scarlett and I simply cannot, and will not, forgive you."
Scarlett and Julian's unwavering stance made the light in Yardley's eyes dim once again.
He frowned.
"I didn't tell you all this to beg for your forgiveness. I just wanted to explain the reason why I treated her so well."
He let out another heavy sigh.
"Now that she's become like this, I don't even know if she'll ever recover. Honestly, my feelings are completely tangled right now."
"I used to think that as long as I took good care of her, helped plan her life, and found her a good partner, she'd live a happy life."
"I never expected she would take a winning hand and completely destroy it."
