Julian let go of his hand, deciding not to press the issue.
Yardley picked up his glass, downed another full shot, and finally laid bare the secret he had buried for so many years.
"That night, my mom suddenly told me that Sylvia was actually my half-sister. She was the illegitimate daughter my mom had with another man."
"That was the year my dad started seeing his secretary, Irene Sommers. He was so wrapped up with her that he barely ever came home. Furious, my mom demanded a divorce and moved out for a year."
"During that year, she attended a class reunion and rekindled an old flame with her first love, Craig Schmidt... They started seeing each other frequently after that reunion, and eventually, she got pregnant and gave birth to Sylvia."
Hearing this massive bombshell, Scarlett found it utterly inconceivable. Her eyes widened, staring at Yardley in absolute shock, momentarily at a loss for words.
Julian was equally astonished. After all, a double-affair scenario like this was entirely unheard of in his own family.
Seeing their expressions, Yardley’s smile turned even more bitter.
"When I first heard it, I was just as shocked as you are. I couldn't believe my own mother would do something like that."
"Even though she was living somewhere else, my three sisters and I visited her often. She had gained a lot of weight, but we just assumed she was getting heavier. We never, in our wildest dreams, imagined she was secretly carrying a child and giving birth."
Hearing this, Scarlett felt a throbbing headache coming on. She instinctively frowned.
"Your mom had already given birth to four children. Why on earth would she secretly have Sylvia?"
Yardley sighed.
"I asked her the same thing. She said that because she had already had four children, her uterus was in terrible shape. When she got pregnant with Sylvia, the placenta attached too deeply to the uterine wall. If she had recklessly gotten an abortion, it could have caused a fatal hemorrhage. The doctor strongly advised her to carry the baby to term."
Scarlett asked, "And your dad had no idea during that entire pregnancy?"
