A leader like that was rare in any workplace.
Anyone would count their lucky stars to have her.
Juniper hurriedly left the villa to hail a cab, rushing so fast she had put on mismatched shoes.
She kept her head down, dialing Jade's number on repeat, praying the girl was okay.
Because she was so focused on her phone, she didn't notice that the car was heading in the opposite direction of the crash site.
By the time she realized it, ten minutes had passed.
She looked up at the driver in front of her. He was wearing a low-pulled cap and thick gloves, his eyes fixed dead ahead.
Juniper gripped her purse, subtly sliding one hand inside.
After her last traumatic experience, she had learned how to protect herself.
Her thumb hovered over the emergency contact button on her phone as her fingers wrapped around a small canister.
She kept her voice perfectly level, hiding any trace of panic. "Excuse me, aren't we going the wrong way?"
The driver didn't turn around. "There's a traffic jam near the accident. This detour is faster."
"Pull over, please. I don't want to go anymore."
The car suddenly accelerated, swerving sharply down a desolate, unpaved road.
Juniper decisively pulled out her pepper spray, yanked back the driver's hat, and sprayed it directly into his eyes.
"Argh!"
The man let out a guttural scream, wildly jerking the steering wheel.
The car careened off the dirt road and sent them tumbling down a steep embankment, flipping several times.
Juniper clung onto the handle for dear life, the violent motion making her stomach heave. Shards of shattered glass drove into her ankle. The agony brought tears to her eyes, but she forced them back.
The man's eyes were burning, and he was pinned in his seat, several pieces of glass piercing his shoulder.
He was heavily built. Grunting in pain, he pulled a knife from his belt and blindly slashed the air behind him.
He wanted her dead.
Juniper dragged herself out through the shattered window, biting down hard on her lip to suppress any sound.
She gripped her phone tightly in her hand. Fueled by sheer adrenaline, she managed to limp a few hundred feet away before a voice drifted through her phone speaker.
