He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 80

The two women stared at her. She quickly lowered her head. "Mrs. Thorne, I have a class this afternoon. I should get going."

Mrs. Thorne stood up. "I'll have someone drive you back."

"That's alright. I can get a cab. Thank you."

Lydia stayed in her seat, watching Juniper with a loaded gaze.

Coincidentally, that day was Juniper's eighteenth birthday, marking exactly one year since she had parted ways with Nelson.

She had envisioned countless scenarios for their reunion, but every time, she only managed to watch him from a distance.

Watching the crowds of exceptional people coming and going around him.

And watching him walk right past her without a single glance, as if he had forgotten she existed.

It had only been a year.

Waves of disappointment washed over her.

From her first day at Capital University, Juniper had been looking for part-time work. She finally took the archive sorting job that no one else wanted.

It paid a few hundred bucks a month to organize an endless sea of documents, meaning she spent most of her time locked in the archives.

She had been cooped up in there for over two months until Mrs. Thorne invited her to lunch that day.

When she returned, she shut herself back in the room. It felt like burying herself in the tedious paperwork was the only way to stop overthinking what Lydia had said.

Eighteen-year-old Juniper was too conflicted, just as twenty-five-year-old Juniper was. She had never been a likable character.

As she was sorting, the lights in the archive room suddenly went out. Startled, she nearly dropped her books. She scrambled for her phone to use the flashlight, but in her panic, it slipped from her hands.

Just as she crouched down to pick it up, a cake with lit candles was placed in front of her.

Crouching on the floor with her phone in one hand, she looked up to see Nelson crouching as well, holding the cake.

The cake had a number eighteen on it, its candles casting a faint glow.

The archive room was pitch black, illuminated only by this tiny flicker of light.
