Nelson had suffered from a heart condition since childhood, but his personality was anything but fragile.
The Saint family catered to him. His older brother who ran the family catered to him. He was born with everything others could only dream of.
He was noble, proud, cold, and arrogant.
He never hid who he wanted to talk to and who he didn't.
Yet, here he was, so complicated and conflicted over a woman.
Julian remained silent, though he was stunned.
He didn't tease him, because he caught that brief, deeply hidden flash of hostility in Nelson's eyes.
How interesting.
Juniper followed Julian out. Her mind felt like mush tonight.
Julian opened the car door for her.
The woman before him had reddened eyes and a stunning figure. She looked like the well-behaved type, a harmless rabbit. But she must have bitten Nelson hard, leaving him scarred without him even realizing it.
Even at a moment like this, Juniper whispered, "Thank you."
Julian grinned instantly and slid into the driver's seat. "Don't mention it."
He buckled his seatbelt and asked, "Where do you live, Ms. Lane?"
Juniper gave him her current address.
Julian raised an eyebrow and stepped on the gas.
The car was quiet. The sound of the wind was sealed out, leaving only the fleeting streetlights casting flickering shadows on their faces.
Julian glanced at the rearview mirror. The woman was staring blankly out the window. She had beautiful eyes.
He spoke up. "Nelson had a girlfriend back in college. We never saw him in love. After all, the guy looked down on everyone since he was a kid and thought women were annoying. When he was fifteen, he swore that if he ever fell in love, he'd jump off the city bridge. We all thought the bridge wouldn't get that lucky. Later, he went to Oakley and told us there was a girl there who was a lot of fun."
