Ever the gentleman, he didn't shake her awake. Instead, he grabbed a cashmere throw from the back and gently draped it over her shoulders.

A deafening blare of a horn ripped through the silence. The sleek black car tore past them at breakneck speed, the violent gust of wind sending dead leaves scattering wildly across the pavement.

Juniper jolted awake, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Alistair watched the taillights disappear down the street, an amused arch to his brow.

Without hesitating, she offered her wrist over the center console. "Is something wrong with me?"

Her deadly serious expression made him laugh softly. "No, no. Occupational hazard. Force of habit."

He pressed two steady fingers to her wrist. After a brief moment, he respectfully pulled back. "Your vitals are fine, but you're running on fumes. There's deep-rooted fatigue, probably from childhood illnesses and chronic poor nutrition. You need to take better care of yourself."

Juniper breathed a sigh of relief. A full medical checkup was a luxury she hadn't been able to afford in years.

"The dowager filled me in on your situation," Alistair added gently. "If you ever need anything, just text me."

Juniper nodded, overwhelming gratitude softening her features. "I will."

She looked devastatingly innocent.

Alistair tore his gaze away, shifted into gear, and drove off into the night.
