He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 41

Juniper got into Nelson’s car, watching the scenery blur past the window.

She couldn't see Brooks in the rearview mirror. He didn't seem to be following them anymore, which allowed her to finally exhale.

Five minutes later, she broke the silence. "You can just drop me off on the side of the road."

Nelson didn't say a word. He simply spun the steering wheel, and the car whipped around, heading back the way they came.

He didn't stop until they pulled up to an upscale, ambient restaurant where several middle-aged men in sharp suits were waiting.

Seeing him return, the group of executives visibly relaxed.

The man had abruptly driven off earlier, leaving them entirely in the dark about what had happened.

Now, seeing a woman step out of his car, none of them dared to speculate.

The lead official, the head of the Oakley branch, eagerly extended his hand. "Hello, Mr. Saint. And this is...?"

"An old acquaintance of mine from Oakley. She knows the area well. She can do her part in helping her hometown develop."

The lead official's gaze grew even more fervent. "Shall we head inside and discuss the details?"

With such a heavy expectation placed on her shoulders, Juniper couldn't leave even if she wanted to. Besides, she had seen these men in the local papers before. If Nelson actually scrapped this massive development project because of her, she would be the greatest sinner in all of Oakley.

She was forced to walk inside, her entire body stiff.

A table had already been reserved in a private dining room, and the group took their seats one by one.

Nelson's assistant arrived right on cue, handing over a stack of hastily prepared documents to his boss.

The servers quietly brought out the food, and the atmosphere remained fairly cordial.

Juniper sat beside Nelson. She had long known that his moods shifted faster than flipping the pages of a book. One second he was looking at her with absolute disgust, and the next, he was forcibly tying her to his side.
