He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 167

Knowing his meltdown was fueled by sheer humiliation and powerlessness, Beatrice desperately gripped his hand. "So you lost face once, big deal! Who cares about those stuck-up rich folks? They don't even know you. Walter, listen to me, we still have two kids. Nadine is pregnant with our grandson! Don't you dare do anything stupid!"

The doctor administered a sedative and shook his head grimly before stepping out.

Wiping her tears, Beatrice latched onto Juniper's arm.

Standing perfectly still, Juniper asked in a deadpan voice, "Who took you to that hotel?"

Beatrice turned pale and let out a heavy sigh. She was entirely incapable of navigating the complex, manipulative games of the city elite. In their village, if you had a problem, you screamed it out; nobody plotted in the shadows.

"When your dad and I got off the train, we couldn't get ahold of you, so I called Mrs. Saint. She said she'd send someone. A guy in a baseball cap picked us up, put us in a nearby motel to rest, and later moved us to the fancy hotel. He told us to help out with the staff work, saying you'd probably show up."

She shifted uncomfortably as she spoke.

The Sovereign Grand had been so intimidatingly opulent that both she and Walter were too terrified to even look around, paranoid that someone would sniff out their poverty.

Walter had puffed out his chest, desperately trying to project confidence, but his cheap clothes and awkward twitching broadcasted his crushing insecurities to everyone in the room.

Everyone craved dignity, but for people like them, the harder they tried to fake it, the more they looked like clowns.

Completely oblivious, Walter had simply been a nervous wreck—a deep, agonizing, bone-deep inferiority.

When they were first led into the suite to wait, Walter had immediately started touching the furniture as soon as the escort left.

"This is the city for you, money everywhere. Sleeping here one night must cost a fortune, huh?"

Beatrice, however, had felt a creeping sense of dread. She didn't believe Yvonne Saint was acting out of pure generosity.

She kept nagging Walter, "If you run into anyone, keep your mouth shut. June already hates us, don't embarrass her."
