She leaned down to claim his lips, but his gaze snapped toward her. With ruthless force, he shoved her back, completely devoid of any gentleness.
"What the hell are you doing?"
His voice was ice-cold, his eyes resembling a cornered, savage beast.
Startled, Lydia’s palms grew slick with sweat. "I was just checking your temperature. The doctor is on the way."
"Get out!"
He aggressively rubbed his temples, his voice a low growl. "Get the hell out, Lydia."
Her eyes instantly reddened, the rejection stinging worse than a physical slap. The humiliation was unbearable.
Perhaps she should just throw caution to the wind, strip off her clothes, and force a kiss on him. Surely, that would break whatever sliver of control he had left.
Her hands curled into tight fists, her teeth sinking into her lower lip as Nelson ground out, "I want Juniper... give her to me."
Memories violently assaulted Lydia’s mind.
The first time he had coaxed Juniper into his bed, the poor girl had trembled like a leaf. For someone who had played by the rules her entire life, sleeping with a man so soon felt like a violation of her own principles. She had been terrified, subconsciously convinced she was tainted and disobedient.
She had made him swear, over and over, that he would never touch another woman.
Hovering over her, sweating profusely from the agonizing restraint, Nelson hadn't dared to move an inch.
The girl beneath him had been paralyzed with fear, tears clinging to her lashes.
His heart had melted, overwhelming affection drowning out his raw hunger.
So, he had taken her hand and pressed it against his freshly inked tattoo.
Juniper’s eyes had lit up, a soft smile curving her lips as reassurance washed over her.
Only then had he kissed her, thoroughly lost in the moment. "From now on, only you get to touch me..."
Only Juniper.
The sweet nothings had been far too beautiful.
So beautiful that recalling them now felt like a blade twisting in Lydia’s chest.
Furious and trembling, Lydia realized Nelson was still somewhat lucid.
As long as he maintained any grip on reality, she couldn't cross the line.
If she did, he would undoubtedly destroy her once he sobered up.
"I'll go hurry the doctor."
She muttered, turning on her heel and marching out, her heart pounding furiously.
