He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 150

Walter set his phone down and closed his eyes. "What time are we leaving tomorrow?"

Beatrice exhaled in relief. "First thing in the morning. We'll catch the six a.m. bus to avoid the crowds."

Naturally, Beatrice had to inform her son of their trip to the city.

Brooks Lane was still in bed when his parents called to say they were already on the bus to town and would be transferring to a coach bound for the metropolis.

Brooks scratched his head groggily. "Didn't you go see her last time? Did she even give you the time of day?"

Lying next to him, Nadine Lane instantly perked up. She violently pinched Brooks's arm, quickly typing a message on her phone and shoving it in his face to read out loud.

Brooks grumbled, but she shot him a vicious glare.

Defeated, he recited, "Are you guys secretly taking money to Juniper? She abandoned our family years ago. Why are you still crawling back to her?"

"Brooks, why don't you come with us?"

Brooks sneered. "Forget it. When has she ever cared about having me as a brother? Back when Nelson was around, she only ever trailed after him like a lost puppy. I told her to spit on him once, and not only did she refuse, but they teamed up to shut me out."

The moment the words left his mouth, Brooks paused, surprised that a memory from so many years ago was still burned into his brain.

Irritation spiked in his chest. He knew his sister was academically gifted; the entire town constantly praised her.

He and Juniper were polar opposites. He was practically allergic to books. No matter how hard he tried, the information never stuck, so he dropped out in middle school to work construction with Walter. Sure, a part of him wanted her to get into a top university and make a name for herself, but deep down, he was terrified. He was terrified the gap between them would grow so wide she'd be ashamed to even admit they were related.

He was in his thirties, a complete failure who had to rely on the money his sister sent back to buy his house.

An inferiority complex inevitably breeds resentment.

His voice spiked into a shout. "I'm not going to see her! If she wants to ruin her life for Nelson, then let her drop dead!"
