Chapter 96
[Daisy’s POV)
I saw her. I’m almost sure I saw her. The problem was, I didn’t get enough time to prove it, because everything happened too fast.
One second, I was standing there, staring at a group of men who looked like they belonged in a crime documentary; the next second, doors were opening, voices were low, movements were sharp, and the girl- the girl was slipping into the back seat of a car like she had done it a hundred times before.
“Wait-
I said in my confusion but then none of them heard. They couldn’t have, due to the distance.
With the girl slipping into the car, the remaining men got in almost immediately after, no hesitation, no wasted movement. Doors shut. Engine on. And just like that, they started driving away.
I stepped back instinctively, half hiding behind a pole like that would somehow give me a better angle or protect me from… I don’t even know what. I leaned slightly, trying to catch a last glimpse through the tinted window. Nothing.
They drove off and I stayed there longer than I should have, just staring: at the empty road, at the space where the car had been, at the place where I might have just seen my friend get into a car with men who looked like they individually had their own gangs.
“…okay.”
I blinked once, then dragged a hand over my face and exhaled. “Let’s think,” I muttered to myself.
That was Aria.
No, that was not Aria. That looked like her.
The hair… similar, but also not similar: slightly curlier. Or maybe it just looked curlier because of the lighting. Or maybe my eyes were tweaking.
But then the outfit?
Not her style. Definitely not her style.
But the height, the shoulders back physique: that was suspiciously Aria-shaped. I just didn’t really grasp the face. That was the problem.
