Chapter 88
(Daisy’s POV)
There are moments in life where everything depends on what you say next.
This was one of them.
Because standing in front of Mabel, with her eyes narrowed like she was about to peel my thoughts, open and read them out loud, I
knew one thing very clearly-
If I got this wrong, my life would get significantly worse.
I’m talking documentary-level suffering.
So I inhaled slowly, gathered what little composure I had left, and smiled.
“Adrian?” I repeated, like the name had to travel through my brain before meaning anything. “I don’t know any Adrian.” I said finally, deciding this was the best option.
Mabel’s brows didn’t move. Her girls, however, did.
They exchanged looks, then came the laughter- light, dismissive, exactly what you’d expect.
“Please,” one of them said, rolling her eyes. “The new guy? Tall, insane face card, body built like a crime? Everyone knows him.”
“Exactly,” I added quickly, nodding like we were all on the same page. “That’s what I mean. Everyone knows of him. Doesn’t mean 1
know him.”
Mabel still wasn’t laughing or smiling. She tilted her head slightly, studying me.
“So you’re not close to him.”
It wasn’t a question.
It was a trap.
I forced a small shrug. “Other than seeing him across a hallway or online? No. I’ve never spoken to him.”
That part hurt a little. Mostly because it was technically a lie wrapped around a truth I couldn’t afford.
Her friends laughed again.
“Yeah, that sounds about right.”
“As if someone like him would relate to her.”
“I know right!”
Finally, Mabel relaxed. Just a little.
She let out a quiet breath and shook her head, almost like she was disappointed in herself.
“I don’t know why I even considered it,” she said. “Him associating with someone like you? That would be ridiculous.”
That landed exactly how it was meant to. But I didn’t care. She waved her hand then like she was dismissing a waiter.
“Leave my sight.”
I didn’t need to be told twice.
I turned immediately and walked away before she could change her mind and decide to stress me more, my steps quicker. I didn’t run, because running would suggest panic.
And I was not panicking. I was briskly relocating.
Yes.
