Chapter 320
u might be my daughter, Volkov said, “but blood has never been something I hesitate to spill. Even my own.”
I let the gun fall.
“You’ve killed my generals,” he continued. “Important men. My brother lies dying beside me. I’m not particularly angry about any of that. A pause. “What irritates me is that you’ve forced my hand before I was ready to use it. I still intended to use you against your father. Now you’re simply a waste of my time.”
He raised the gun..
I felt the entire world tilt sideways.
There was nothing left in me to reach for. No move, no plan, no last trick hiding somewhere in reserve. Volkov stood exactly where he needed to stand, gen leveled, and the next second belonged entirely to him.
I could lose him.
Right here. Right now. Something I’d only just started to understand as real, as mine, about to be taken before I’d even had the chance to fully believe in it.
Volkov adjusted his aim…
… and then gunshot cracked through the room.
I flinched hard, my whole body bracing for the worst, my eyes flying to DeLuca at once.
He was still there. Still kneeling. Still breathing, staring back at me with the same confusion I felt, both of us turning toward my mother next, checking, terrified, and finding her untouched too.
None of us had been hit…
Confusion tangled with the dread still sitting in my chest, and I turned toward Volkov, trying to understand what I was even looking at.
He was leaning against the table now, slower than before, shifting sideways like he was fighting to stay upright. It didn’t make sense until I saw it properly – a dark, spreading wound blooming across his chest, blood pooling fast beneath the hand he pressed against it.
His grip on the table gave out.
He crashed to the floor, coughing, and a voice rang out behind him.
‘Die, you demon. Die,”
I turned toward the sound and found Aria standing in the doorway, both hands wrapped around a gun, tears streaming freely down her face. She wasn’t looking at anyone else in the room. Just him. Like shifting her focus for even a second might cost her something she couldn’t afford to lose.
“You have never been proud of me,” she said, voire cracking, gun steady despite it. No matter what I did. No matter what I tried to achieve. My whole life, I’ve been chasing your approval, trying to reach some standard you set that I could never actually touch.”
Her breath shook

Chapter 320
“I understand now that bar was never reachable. So it’s better this way. You die, and I finally get to be free of needing something from you that was never real to begin with.
Vakov stared up at her, blood still spilling between his fingers, coughing weakly, and something passed between them in that look, something heavy enough that the whole room seemed to hold still around it.
1 might not have the strength to survive what you pushed me toward.” Aria said, quieter now. “But I’ll finally have peace, once you’re gone
“Goodbye.
The final shot gang out, sharp and absolute, and Volkov’s head snapped back before his body crumpled fully to the floor. Still.
