He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly
Chapter 318
isy’s POV)
I stood there, but the room might as well have vanished around me, because the only thing I could actually see was DeLuca’s face.
I’d never watched him look like this. Not once, not even tonight, not even through everything else this evening had thrown at him. Whatever expression currently lived on his face, I didn’t have a name for it, and that scared me more than anything Volkov had said so far.
“You lie, DeLuca said, low. “My father would never do such a thing.”
Alexandro let out a short, cutting laugh. “Oh, that boy. Still wasting his trust, even with the truth sitting right in front of him.”
“He would never. DeLuca’s voice climbed, firmer now, louder.
Volkov set his glass down with a small, deliberate click and shook his head, almost fond in his disappointment.
“Why,” he said, “would I spend my time and my routine bringing you here just to lie to you? You may believe you’re important, DeLuca. I have better things
to do with my evening.
One of his men leaned in, murmuring something, gesturing to a small screen. Volkov glanced at it briefly, then returned his attention to DeLuca.
“So take this from me. In my generosity.” He began pacing, slow, unhurried. “That night, years ago, when we attacked – your father didn’t kill your mother directly. He let her die. When reinforcements arrived and the police got involved, I left. But before I did, I saw her fall from the pavement. I saw her hit the ground. A pause. “And I saw your father standing over her afterward. No emotion on his face at all.”
He looked almost amused at himself for continuing.
“It might sound like I’m inventing something convenient. But I know resentment when I see it worn on someone’s face, and that was exactly what I saw on his. None of it is my business, of course. Family matters are yours to untangle.”
He kept walking, Alexandro falling into step beside him.
‘It might still sound unbelievable to you,” Volkov continued. “But what if, like my own case, your mother never truly supported the man your father wanted to be? What if the life behind closed doors was never quite the picture people assumed? So he let her go. The way 1 let mine go.” He gestured, almost lazily, toward Elena. “Except I never killed either of my wives. There she stands. Beautiful, breathing evidence.”
He turned back to DeLuca, something close to pride settling into his expression,
“Doesn’t that make me the better mafia father?”
“Yes, one of the men said instantly. ‘Yes, it does, master.”
Others echoed it, quiet and immediate, and Volkov simply looked at DeLuca, letting the moment sit there, unbothered by how it landed.
1 dragged my attention back to Deluca’s face, and what I found there frightened me more than the confession itself. His eyes moved, restless, darting between thoughts I couldn’t follow, his whole body carrying the visible weight of something breaking apart in real time. I’d never seen him like this. Not shaken Not disturbed Not fost. Whatever this revelation was doing inside him, I couldn’t reach it, couldn’t fix it, and that helplessness sat in my chest like a

Chapter 318
“It can’t be,” he said, barely audible, and I heard everything underneath those three words the disbelief, the grief, something close to a heart cracking
down the middle.
Vakov exhaled, patient.
