Chapter 220
(Daisy’s POV)
Helplessness had always sounded like such a small word.
It wasn’t.
Not even close.
Until today, I had thought helplessness meant being unable to defend yourself, unable to fight back or escape. I had imagined it as something physical, something that trapped your body.
I hadn’t known it could trap your heart too.
Because DeLuca was here.
He had actually come.
He was only a few steps away from this apartment, walking toward the front door with nothing but concern on his mind. As far as he knew, I was inside, injured and bleeding, waiting for him to help me.
Instead, he was walking toward an ambush.
Toward rifles.
Toward people waiting to kill him.
And there wasn’t a single thing I could do about it.
The realization hollowed me out.
If our positions had been reversed-if I had been the one walking into danger-at least I could have tried to run. I could have screamed. I could have done something.
But this…
Watching someone you loved unknowingly walk toward death while you remained completely powerless…
This was worse.
Much worse.
Across from me, Aria studied my face for another moment before the faint smile she’d been wearing slowly disappeared. Whatever satisfaction she had taken from my panic seemed to have run its course.
Without a word, she rose gracefully from the couch. There was no rush in her movements, no excitement or nervousness. She looked like someone preparing to welcome an ordinary guest instead of a man she intended to murder.
Then she lifted one hand.
Nothing more than a small gesture.
Her men moved instantly.
The room came alive as one slipped behind the wall near the entrance, another positioned himself beside the hallway where the angle would give him a clear line of sight to the front door, and the third disappeared behind a large cabinet before lowering himself into position.
Only then did I truly notice what they were carrying.
Not handguns.
Rifles.
My stomach tightened violently.
I had been so consumed by everything else-the betrayal, the arguments, the fear-that I hadn’t really looked.
Now I did.
Every weapon was already loaded.
Every barrel pointed toward the entrance.
Toward the exact place DeLuca would appear the moment he stepped inside.
This wasn’t chaos.
It wasn’t a desperate kidnapping that had somehow spiraled out of control.
This had been planned.
Every position.
Every angle.
Every movement.
For one reckless moment, instinct overwhelmed reason.
I had to warn him.
I didn’t know how.
I didn’t even have a plan.
I only knew I couldn’t sit here and watch him walk into this.
My lungs filled as I prepared to shout.
“Daisy.”
