He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 203

Chapter 203

“You need to heal,” he said quietly. “That’s your responsibility now.”

I opened my mouth.

He raised a finger.

“Don’t.”

“I haven’t even said anything.”

“You were about to.”

“…I was.”

His mouth almost curved into a smile.

Almost.

“This apartment is secure. Very few people know it exists, and the people who do are people I trust.”

My eyes drifted toward the front door before returning to him.

“And if something happens?”

“You call me.”

“What if you’re busy?”

“I answer.”

“What if you’re being shot at?”

“I still answer.”

I couldn’t help smiling.

“You make that sound easy.”

“It is.”

“It really isn’t.”

“It will be.”

Something about the certainty in his voice made arguing feel pointless.

He reached out then, his hand lifting almost instinctively before gently brushing a loose strand of hair away from my face. The touch lasted no longer than a heartbeat, yet it somehow carried more meaning than anything dramatic ever could.

“Heal,” he said, his voice lowering slightly. “That’s your job.”

His hand fell away.

“Leave the rest to me.”

I swallowed.

Every logical argument I’d prepared disappeared.

Instead, I simply nodded.

“Okay.”

The word tasted strange.

Not because I agreed with leaving him to walk into danger.

Because I understood there wasn’t another choice.

He studied me for another second, as though making certain I truly wasn’t going to follow him despite my injury. Apparently satisfied, he rose to his feet.

“I’ll be back.”

The promise sounded less like reassurance and more like a statement of fact.
