He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 179

Chapter 179

Suddenly fragments of memory began rushing back all at once. The football field. The crowd. The men dressed in black. The gun pointed toward DeLuca…

Running. Falling. Blood.

DeLuca.

My hand immediately flew toward my side before I could stop myself. The nurse intervened at once.

“The surgery was successful.”

“Surgery?”

“Yes.”

I looked down at myself, then back at her. Then down again.

I was beginning to feel as though I had missed several important chapters of my own life.

“The bullet was removed,” she continued. “But you need to remain careful. The injury was serious, and while the operation went well, we don’t want you making sudden movements.”

That made me concentrate more.

“Serious?”

The nurse hesitated in the way people did when they wanted to avoid alarming someone while simultaneously being unable to lie.

“It could have been much worse.”

That was not comforting. That was actually the opposite of comforting.

“The important thing is that you’re awake now.”

I stared at her suspiciously.

“You say that like I wasn’t supposed to be.”

She frowned, confused. “No one said that.”

“You thought it.”

“No.”

“You absolutely thought it.”

Both nurses suddenly looked tired, and after a moment, the first nurse sighed.

“You need rest.”

“Ingri to-get-up.”

“You just woke up.”

“Exactly. That’s peak rest.”

The nurses were clearly unimpressed by my logic.

One of them adjusted the blanket again while the other checked a monitor beside my bed before finally saying, “Miss. For now, your biggest concern should be recovery. No sudden movements, no unnecessary strain, and if you feel dizzy, uncomfortable, or notice anything unusual, you call for us immediately.”

I nodded obediently.

Then immediately ruined the effect.

“How unusual are we talking? Because my entire life is unusual.”

Neither woman laughed.

Medical professionals had no appreciation for quality humor.

“Also,” the nurse continued, wisely ignoring me, “there are people waiting to see you.”

That caught my attention.
