Chapter 168
“On the other hand,” he started and swallowed, “love is complicated, and there’s me who’s seen enough-
The sentence died abruptly as his attention suddenly shifted toward the apartment entrance. At first I didn’t understand what had distracted him, but then I heard it too. Footsteps.
Someone was approaching.
I became alarmed.
“Lillian.”
DeLuca gave a single nod, as though this only confirmed something he had already expected.
“And so the plan begins.” He said and the transition was so abrupt that it left me blinking at him in confusion.
“Wait.”
“I’ll be in my room.”
“That’s it?”
“That is the plan.”
Before I could argue any further, he had already turned away and disappeared into his room, quietly shutting the door behind him. I stared after him for a moment, then glanced toward the hallway before looking back at the closed door.
“That’s it?” I muttered to myself.
A brief wave of panic threatened to take over, but I quickly reminded myself that nothing catastrophic was happening. It was just Lillian.
The same Lillian I had known for years- but the same Lillian DeLuca was somehow convinced had been orchestrating half the disasters in my life.
But now the idea sounded ridiculous, which was why I hurried toward the couch and dropped onto it just before the apartment door opened.
A second later, Lillian stepped inside.
“Hey.”
I looked up.
“Hi.”
She smiled briefly before her gaze began roaming across the apartment. The movement was subtle and quick, but noticeable enough that I found myself wondering whether DeLuca would count it as suspicious.
Probably. The man could find suspicion in oxygen.
“Is DeLuca in?”
The question come casually.
Yeah. I shrugged. “Probably.”
Jillian nodded, but almost immediately followed it with another question.
‘Have you two spoken?”
hated lying, especially to her, which made the answer feel unpleasant the moment it left my mouth.
‘No. Not really.”
Jillian’s shoulders seemed to loosen almost immediately. The change lasted less than a second before she corrected it, but I still noticed… I think.
I don’t want to make assumptions. So maybe it’s just me.
After another moment, she disappeared into her room carrying several bags, leaving the apartment quiet once more. I released a long breath and leaned
back against the couch.
