He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 262

Chapter 262

Alex’s POV

The courthouse steps.

Maya beside me.

Her hand in mine

I had been standing in front of cameras for the wrong reasons for long enough that standing in front of them for any reason had acquired an association I was going to need time to revise.

I looked at the steps.

At the door the chief prosecutor would come through.

At Maya’s profile….

She had been awake before me.

Every morning for weeks, awake before me, already in the sitting room of the temporary apartment with the laptop and the files…

This morning she had been in the kitchen.

Making breakfast.

We had eaten without saying much.

There was not much to say that had not already been said

The evidence was with Reeves.

The credential fraud was documented.

Brenda had asked for a lawyer and had said the sentence that had stopped the detective at the door.

Daniel was alive and had been located and was under protection.

The forty-third floor search warrant had been executed

Everything that could be in motion was in motion.

Today was the day it either produced what it had been building toward or it didn’t.

The door opened.

The chief prosecutor.

She approached the microphones….. The cameras adjusted.

The questions fell quiet in the collective way that rooms fell quiet before announcements…

She reached the microphones.

She looked at her notes.

Then she looked up

“Following a thorough review of all available evidence,” she said, “including new forensic documentation received by this office and the collaborative findings of the financial crimes investigation, we have concluded there is insufficient evidence to support the allegations made against Mr. Alexander Voss.”

The questions started immediately.

I barely heard them.

“The case against Mr. Voss,” she said, continuing through the questions, “is officially closed. All associated regulatory holds on accounts connected to Mr. Voss personally are expected to be lifted within seventy-two hours pending standard administrative processing.”

She continued

I stopped receiving the words.

Maya.

I turned.

She was already looking at me.

The expression on her face… the one that had been present throughout, the one that had not changed regardless of what the coverage was saying or what the board had decided or what the frozen accounts had contained or what the temporary apartment had communicated about the distance between what we had and what we might lose.

She put her arms around me.

Not for the cameras…

For the private reason that the cameras happened to be present for.

Her face against my shoulder.

The warmth of her.

The twins, between us…

“I told you,” she said. Against my jacket. Quietly. For me.

“I know,” I said.

“The truth wins,” she said.

“It won,” I said, “because you never stopped believing in it.”

She pulled back enough to look at me.

At my face

“I never stopped believing in you,” she said. “That’s not the same thing.”

The steps.

The questions continuing.

The cameras following us as we moved….. not toward the bank of microphones, we had agreed with Harrington that today we let the official statement stand on its own, but laterally, toward the car where Marcus was waiting.

Shareholders.

Ahandful of them, the ones who had been here for the announcement, the ones who had apparently decided the announcement warranted their physical presence

One of them caught my eye.

A man I recognised from the governance table….. one of the institutional shareholders, the kind who existed in formal rows at the annual meetings and who had been in the 100m, figuratively, for everything the past months had contained.

He looked at me.

Something in his expression…. not the formal apology that some of them were apparently preparing, not the lowered head of someone who had decided that diminishment was the appropriate posture for having been wrong.

A direct look.

“I was wrong,” he said.

Three words.

I nodded

Nothing additional was required.

He moved on.

The car.

Marcus at the door.

The questions still coming…. adjusting now, already adjusting, the coverage pivoting in the specific, rapid way that coverage pivoted when its story had just acquired a new protagonist and was reorganising around the pivot.

No longer Alex Voss accused.

Someone else.

The question now…. audible in the fragments reaching us as Marcus closed the door, was asking a different name.

The name on the warrant that had been executed.

The name on the forty-third floor.

The name that had been present in the investigation for months and was now the name the cameras were pointed toward.

The television screens in the car.

Maya had her phone out.

The breaking news banner was already running.

Not the official statement about the case closure… the other story, the one that had been building in parallel and was now arriving at the same moment.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for businessman Mason in connection with corporate fraud, conspiracy, and conduct related to the ongoing Hargrove-Voss investigation.

The banner.

Running.

Repeating.

Maya looked at me.

I looked at the screen.

At the name

The investigation.

The credential fraud.
