Chapter 261
Brenda’s PUV
The fourth night without sleep had a different quality from the first three.
A call came… I looked at my phone
The detective’s office…. the financial crimes üfit, whose number I now recognised because it had appeared on my phone twice before.
“Ms. Osei,” the voice said. “We’d like you to come in this morning.”
I held a deep breath
“Of course,” I said.
The interview room was the same room.
Different documents…
The financial crimes unit had been running its analysis in the period since the first interview, and the analysis had produced what analyses of financial structures produced when they were run by people who were competent and patient.
The table, when they were done placing things, had almost no empty space….
Bank records.
Security access logs
Company registration documents for three entities I recognised as the shells through which my payment had been structured.
Photographs….
The café photograph, the one that had been slipped under Brenda’s door, now apparently also in the possession of people who had found it through a different channel.
A timeline
The timeline of my access record against the timeline of the security footage gap against the timeline of the credential fraud.
They had been patient
They had been thorough.
The lead detective was the younger one from the previous interview….. the one who had been writing while watching rather than asking while writing, who had circled a sentence in his notebook after the fraction of a second and the correction.
He had apparently spent the weeks since building toward this morning.
“We’ve verified your movements,” he said and continued
“Your statement doesn’t match the evidence.”
Hooked at the table
15 P113
“You’re mistaken,” I said.
word mistaken arrived in my own voice and immediately communicated its own inadequacy. It was the word of someone who had prepared to say it and had found, in the saying of it, that preparation was not the same as substance
“We’re not,” he said.
The bank statement
Slid across the table.
Three deposits….
Large enough to be significant.
“Consulting payments,” I said.
The word I had prepared.
“Were they?” he said.
Not with particular emphasis
“Every company that transferred money to you dissolved within thirty days of the transfer,” he said. “The registered agents are offshore. The beneficial ownership is not locatable through standard disclosure.” He held my gaze. “These are not the payment structures of a legitimate consulting arrangement….”
I looked at the table…
At the documents.
At my name on the bank statement.
At the dates…
Mason had said the payments were clean.
He had said the structure was designed so that if anything came back toward me, the trail resolved into entities that no longer existed and therefore pointed at nothing.
He had said this in the voice that always had the answer.
He had been wrong
Or he had not been wrong.
He had been right that the entities no longer existed…. they didn’t, the detective had just confirmed this. What he had not mentioned was that the structure of their disappearance communicated exactly what it was
communicating right now, across a table in an interview room, to two detectives who had been trained to read this specific pattern.
The absence of the entity was itself the evidence.
Consulting payments did not require shells that disappeared.
I looked at the bank statement again.
At the figures.
+15 R75
At the dates that mapped, if you knew what you were looking at, to the phases of the plan.
e Paris placement.
The company hire
The Friday evening.
Each phase paid for through a vehicle that had then dissolved.
The confidence that Mason had constructed inside me across the months…. the calm voice, the don’t panic, the they don’t have enough…. was encountering what it encountered when it met actual documentation rather than a theory about documentation.
It was now crumbling.
Not dramatically.
The second detective was watching my face
The same face-watching that had produced the circled sentence in the notebook.
I looked at the table.
At everything on it.
At the decision I had been lying in the dark making for four nights.
The interview concluded at its natural end point.
Procedurally.
The detectives gathered their materials… The room was quiet.
I looked at the glass of water that had been placed on the table at some point in the past hour and that I had not
touched.
I reached for it.
Drank….
Set it down.
Looked at the detective.
“I want a lawyer,” I said.
1
Not from panic.
From the decision that had been building for four nights arriving at the first thing it required.
The detectives exchanged the look that detectives exchanged when something had shifted.
“Of course,” the lead one said. “That’s your right.”
He reached for the form.
I looked at the table one more time
At the bank statements.
IS RTU 9
At the photograph.
The lawyer was the first thing.
