Chapter 258
Zora’s POV
The coverage had shifted overnight.
Not in the direction Mason had been directing it… in the direction that coverage always eventually shifted when the initial story had run long enough for the people asking questions to start asking better ones.
Who benefited from Hale Group’s collapse.
That question had been running for two days in the margins of the coverage. Now it was not in the margins. It was the headline.
I had been refreshing for three hours when I understood it was not going to shift back.
The fear arrived as a physical thing.
Not the abstract version…. I had been afraid before in this situation.
The lobby camera. The meeting with Mason. The corridor on Friday evening. The recording on my phone. The message I had sent Caldwell.
But those had been specific fears… fears connected to identifiable risks with identifiable responses.
This was different
This was the fear that arrived when the story moved in a direction that no longer had a channel.
When the question being asked was the right question.
And the right question was pointing
I drove to Mason’s office.
The same drive I had made before, with the same impulse that had produced it….. the compulsive need to be in the room with the person who was supposed to have the answer rather than reading about the question from a screen.
He looked up when I came through the door.
At my face.
He understood something was wrong before I had said anything.
That was Mason…
It was also the thing that made him the most dangerous person to be in a room with when the room was changing.
“They’re getting closer,” I said.
He looked at his documents
“Every plan has setbacks,” he said.
“This is different,” I said. “The question they’re asking isn’t about Alex anymore. They’re asking who benefited.
They’re looking at the transactions, the account structures, the timeline.” I held his gaze. “If they pull that thread far enough, it reaches both of us.”
He raised his eyes

The flat, steady version.
Not alarmed.
Not strategic.
“Then make sure they don’t,” he said.
I looked at him.
At the face that had been calm throughout every conversation across the past months… through the handshake, through the planning, through the Friday evening, through every update call, through the moment he had said loose ends discover exactly how dangerous they can be and had looked at me while he said it.
The face that had known about the recording on my phone.
The face that had said the things he said anyway because what he said was defensible.
The face that had decided, before any of this, that every person in the arrangement was expendable if the arrangement required it.
Then make sure they don’t.
Not a strategy.
Not a plan….
A delegation.
He was telling me to handle something he had not provided me with the resources to handle, in a situation that had arrived and had decided the outcome was my responsibility.
While the investigation was asking who had benefited
While the question was pointing.
While the thread, if pulled far enough, reached both of us…. but would reach me first.
Because I was the one who had been in the corridor.
I was the one of those whose access log was in the security documentation.
That had always been the design.
I was also instrumental.
I left his office
I sat in my car for several minutes without starting the engine.
I opened my phone.
A hidden folder.
Mason’s messages.
All of them, from the beginning…. the café arrangement, the instructions, the phase two begins tomorrow, the
don’t make emotional decisions, the loose ends discover how dangerous they can be.

hegan copying.
Not because I hadn’t been copying before now….
Because this time I was copying with a specific destination in mind rather than a general precaution.
The destination that the investigation was now pointed toward.
My phone vibrated as I finished.
Unknown number
Not the kind I associated with Mason’s network…. the configuration was different.
I looked at it.
Opened the message.
You’re smarter than Mason. It’s time you proved it
I read it.
Read it again…
Set the phone on the passenger seat.
Looked at the message again….
At the unknown number.
At the street outside the car.
At Mason’s building, visible from this position if I looked up at the right angle.
Someone had been watching the café.
Someone had slipped the photograph of me and Mason under Brenda’s door.
