He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 257

Chapter 257

Mason’s POV

The morning headlines had been satisfying for four days.

The fifth morning was different.

Not dramatically… The stock price still declining. The regulatory investigation still ongoing. The board’s decision still producing the commentary that board decisions produced.

But the question the coverage was asking had changed.

I had learned, across years of watching how stories moved, that the question a story asked was more important than the answer it provided. Answers were contained. They produced a specific, bounded response from the audience and then the story moved on.

Questions accumulated.

A story that asked who benefited from Hale Group’s collapse produced something else.

That question was open-ended.

That question invited investigation rather than verdict

That question pointed outward from Alex rather than inward.

I set the newspaper down.

I summoned my trusted men, two of them at nine-fifteen.

They came in….

“The records,” I said. “Have they all been taken care of?”

The first one nodded.

“We destroyed everything we could reach,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Could reach,” I said.

Not what I had asked.

“What does that mean?” I said.

The second man.

He had the look of someone who had been rehearsing how to say the next thing and had not found a version he was confident in.

“The storage unit in the secondary location,” he said. “The one connected to the account documentation.”

“Yes,” I said.

“We couldn’t access it,” he said. “When we arrived, it had already been searched.”

The room went very quiet.

“Searched by whom,” I said.

We don’t know,” he said.

“You don’t know,” I said.

“The unit manager said a private investigator had been there two days earlier with documentation authorising access,” he said. “He had the paperwork. The manager logged the visit.”

“What documentation?” I said.

“A notarised authorisation from the account holder,” he said. “The secondary account holder. The one listed after the primary.”

I looked at him.

I was already at the door.

“If there is one piece of evidence still in motion,” I said, “I want to know where it is before anyone else reaches it.”

They left.

The window.

The city.

My phone rang

Once, twice….

I answered.

The voice was controlled.

“Sir,” the voice said.

I waited.

“The police have obtained a search warrant.”

“For which property?” I said.

A pause.

“The office building,” the voice said. “The forty-third floor.”

MAYA’S POV

Hargrove Meridian had been the thing I could control.

Not entirely… no company was ever entirely controllable, and the past year had produced sufficient evidence of how quickly the environment around a company could change regardless of how well the company itself was being run. But within the building, within the governance structure, within the specific dimensions of the work… I had been able to operate.

That had been the plan for the weeks since Alex’s leave and the frozen accounts and the house.

Keep one part standing.

everything else was in motion, at least the company would be running

The company my father had built.

The officials arrived at three-fifteen.

Four of them.

Legal representatives alongside.

He handed me the sealed document.

I read it.

Read it again.

“Mrs. Voss,” he said. “We’re conducting a regulatory review into financial records from your father’s administration. Until the review is completed, several departments will be temporarily sealed.”

I looked at him.

“My father kept immaculate records,” I said

Not defensively.

As a statement of fact.

Edwin Hargrove’s records were the most carefully maintained documentation I had seen in the years since I had taken over the company….

“I’m not suggesting wrongdoing,” the official said. “We’re following new information that requires review.”

“What information?” I said.

“I’m not in a position to specify the source at this stage,” he said. “The documentation you’re holding outlines the scope.

I looked at the document.

The scope.

The date ranges extended back past my administration.

Into my father’s.

Into the specific period when my father had been tracking the account structures and the falsified merger valuations and the phantom transactions that had been running beneath everything,

The boxes.

I watched them from the corridor outside my father’s office…..

The employees who had been here for years…. the ones who had worked beside Edwin Hargrove and who had stayed when I took over and who had built the company alongside him, stood in the hallways with the specific, helpless quality of people watching something happen that they had no instrument to prevent.

Decades of work.

Boxed and carried.

Nat seized… reviewed. The distinction that had been explained to me multiple times in the past weeks in the context of various things and that never became less hollow for being technically accurate.

I stood at the window of my father’s office

The office that had been his first and had been mine for years and…

His desk was still his.

I had not changed it.

The photograph that had been there since I was a child was still there, the family photograph, the one from before, everything, the one I had looked at in the kitchen and had understood was there for reasons I was only now beginning to fully understand.

The boxes being carried out were his records.

His immaculate, carefully maintained records.

Being taken because new information had arrived from a source the official was not in a position to specify.

I understood the sequence.

Not fully…. not with the complete picture assembled. But the shape of it.

The storage unit materials.

Alex arrived at four. Marcus had called him.

He came through the entrance with the controlled pace of someone who had received a call on the way to somewhere else and had changed direction and was arriving with the full picture already assembled from what Marcus had communicated.

He found me in my father’s office.

Standing at the window

The boxes, mostly removed now.

The hallways, quieter.

The employees who had watched doing the specific, collective processing of people who had witnessed something they had not anticipated and were not yet through the witnessing.

He came to stand beside me

“They’re trying to destroy everything he left behind,” I said.

Not loudly….

Alex’s hand over mine.

“Then we’ll fight for everything he built,” he said.

I looked at the document the official had given me.

At the scope.

the date ranges.

At the new information that had arrived from an unspecified source and had produced this.

The materials from the storage unit.

Someone had used Edwin’s own documentation against his company.

Not to find the truth.

To obscure it.

To make the company the subject of the investigation rather than the evidence within it.

My father, who had died trying to protect this company and the people in it.

His records, now in boxes.

His legacy, now behind a regulatory wall.

The officials were preparing to leave

The lead one came to the doorway of my father’s office.

“Mrs. Voss,” he said. “There’s one additional matter”

I looked at him.

The expression he wore for the next piece….

“Another party has submitted documentation to the regulatory authority,” he said. “The documentation claims partial ownership interest in Hargrove Meridian.”
