Hands Off The Ice King
1: LIA
Lia’s POV
“Breaking news!”
Aiden went inside-no, that was an understatement-he practically bounced inside Beth’s office with a bright/smile plastered across his face.
“It better be good news,” I told him with a groan, stretching my limbs and causing them to crack all over.
“Woah, you look like hell,” Aiden said, still wearing that annoyingly wide smile, adding even more to my growing irritation.
“Try being in my shoes, Aiden! There’s so much to do.”
That was an understatement. There was a mountainload of work to do.
After Beth became the owner of the franchise, I was transferred to Beth’s team-doing the stuff she used to do back then- but of course, she was a much better boss than Margaret ever was.
And although the new season wasn’t until three months later, we still had to take care of player transfers, recruits, new staff members-the list just went on and on!
Sometimes, I wondered if there was ever a point where we could actually sit down and breathe without another task landing on our desks.
“Where’s Beth?” Aiden asked, taking a seat on the couch and grabbing a slice of pizza that I was pretty sure had been sitting there for the entire day.
I grimaced but pointed toward the table, where Beth was already sleeping, her entire body curled up against the hard
surface.
“Woah,” Aiden retracted before chuckling to himself. “I didn’t even see her there.”
He was about to go to her, but I quickly stopped him.
“Don’t wake her. She’s been doing more work than I am.”
I looked at her face and the dark circles underneath her eyes.
She had been balancing work and taking care of her son really well, and I could only imagine how exhausted she must have been. Between managing the franchise, taking care of everything that came with being a new owner, and being a mother, I honestly didn’t know how she was still standing.
I leaned against my chair and sighed, crossing my arms in front of my chest.
“So, what’s this news you’re talking about?”
His smile widened even more.
“Well, this news is definitely going to cheer you up.”
I straightened in my chair, suddenly more interested as I waited for his big reveal.
“Levi and Hope are engaged!”
I quickly stood from my chair.

“What?” I exclaimed. “Are they back from their vacation?”

“Nope.” Aiden said, shaking his head. “But Levi posted it on his account. I honestly thought he was hacked, but it’s real. This is the first time he’s posted something willingly. I’m so proud.”
He wiped the fake tears from his cheeks, making me chuckle.
I sat back down, still trying to process the news, and at that exact moment, Beth woke up from her slumber.
“They’re getting married?”
Aiden and I both turned to her in surprise.
“You’ve been listening all this time?” Aiden asked.
Beth shook her head, her hair an absolute mess.
“No, I just heard it in passing. They’re really going to get married?”
Just then, she sniffed, surprising the two of us. She actually began crying, and I couldn’t help but smile.
Well, Beth was one of the reasons why they met in the first place, so I understood why the news would hit her this hard.
“Sorry, sorry. All this workload is making me emotional.”
She ran her fingers through her hair, only making it even more of a mess.
“I’m just so happy for them. I always thought the two of them suited each other well, and it turned out to be real.”
Her gaze suddenly went to me.
“Just like what I thought of you and Desmond.”
I pursed my lips at the mention of his name.
“That’s different,” I muttered to myself.
However, I didn’t want to dampen the mood, especially when everyone was still celebrating Levi and Hope, so I quickly cleared my throat and smiled.
“Anyway, is the contract with that player from the Rams done?” I asked. “We need to send the physical copies by mail. right?”
“Oh, yeah,” Beth said, rummaging through her papers.
I internally sighed in relief because the topic with Desmond had been successfully averted.
“Here!” she exclaimed, bringing out an envelope. “I finished it this morning. Are you sure you want to go? You’ve also been working since earlier. Aiden can go-”
“It’s fine,” I cut her off with a wide smile. “I need to walk around, anyway. My ass is going to get flat if I keep sitting here.”
The two of them chuckled.
“Stay safe, then,” Beth said, handing me the envelope.
“I’m just going to the post office, Beth. Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon.”
She suddenly shook her head.

“Nope, I’m not letting you do that. Get some rest for today.”
“I won’t reject that offer, then. See you guys tomorrow!”

With that, I went out of her office and made my way down the rink and toward the street, waiting for a cab to take me to the post office.
I popped in my earphones, humming along to the song playing in my ears, when a familiar red, flashy car suddenly came into my view.
My brows unconsciously furrowed.
That car wasn’t hard to miss.
In fact, I only knew one person who had a car this flashy.
