Chapter 624 Playing Along
“Not your concern.”
Sebastian’s voice was icy and final, every trace of respect for the man long gone.
Wilson’s smug smile faltered for a second.
Wayne moved quietly to his son’s side and gave his shoulder a firm, steadying squeeze.
Just then-
A sharp, startled cry erupted from behind the bedroom door–Miranda’s voice, charged with disbelief.
“Riley What are you saying? You dragged me in here to ‘work something out‘, and your solution is to divorce Sebastian?!”
Even though, logically, Sebastian knew this was almost certainly part of Riley’s plan–that none of it was real–his body still jerked involuntarily.
His tá!! frame went rigid for an instant, his expression darkening further.
Right on cue, Riley’s tearful retort spilled through the door. “What else am I supposed to do? I’m the one he married! Why should I have to put up with this… this humiliation?
“I won’t go back to Nexopolis and have everyone whispering behind my back! Sebastian and I only agreed to this marriage for the family arrangement–we never even had a real wedding, and there’s no actual feeling between us. So fine… maybe I should just step aside and let Teresa have him!”
“What?!”
Miranda’s voice rose, thick with theatrical outrage. “What kind of talk is that! Yes, it started as an arrangement, but since you came into this family, has anyone in the Torres household ever treated you with anything less than respect?
“And now, over something like this, you’re ready to walk away? You’d throw in the towel that easily and run back to the Harper family to play the pampered daughter again? As part of this family, don’t you feel any sense of responsibility? Riley, I have to say.. I’m disappointed.”
Listening to the heated exchange, Wilson was inwardly thrilled. His wrinkled face could barely contain the grin threatening to split
it ear to ear.
Outwardly, though, he slipped into the role of the concerned elder, shuffling over to Sebastian with a mask of fake sympathy. “Oh my… this has really escalated. Your wife seemed so level–headed earlier. How did a private talk with her mother–in–law turn into a divorce threat?
“Tsk, tsk. Not exactly the graciousness one expects from an old–money family’s daughter, is it?”
Each word felt like a needle poking at Sebastian’s already frayed composure.
Sebastian suddenly stood up. The intense, cold anger radiating from him made Wilson’s mouth snap shut on instinct
Without a word, Sebastian swept a dark, unreadable glance over Wilson, then strode to a soka farther away and sat down, tension coiled in his posture.

Wilson jumped in on cue, as if suddenly recalling a crucial piece of gossip. “You know, I did hear something. That Riley wasn’t even raised in the Harper family proper. Got lost as a child, only recently found her way back. Running around who–knows–where all those years… probably picked up all sorts of unsavory habits. No wonder she doesn’t get how things are done in our world.”
